Hints:

-Black Magic is useless in this game, don't waste your time with it unless you want a hard time
-Summons are a waste of time for anything other than the license board, don't use them in fights
-Have at least one Time Mage, Breaker or Machinist in your team. They are a must have in future fights.
-pay attention to the paths of Quickenings in your license board. You can only have 3 quickenings for each character, so make sure you are getting the ones which will give you acess to the best licenses
-Hunters and Red Mages don't make good characters for a team. Avoid them.

Was going to get this game but Crash Bandicoot was a better choice.

I played FFXII back in the day, if they stuck to Balthier and Basch instead of Vaan(I don't even mind penelo) and if the artstyle and world was more like FFTA, arabian nights instead of a mesopotamian star wars I'd dig the shit of this game.

The amount of metalic trash that the characters wear really bothers me for some reason (not counting the Judges, those were nice).

Shikari is kind of thief+ninja since they use both knives and ninja swords, Uhlan is a discount Dragoon because there's no Jump Command, and I think Samurai was just localized as Bushi.

The same applies to Foebreaker (which was just Breaker), and both Red and Time Mage were renamed Red and Time "Battlemage" for some reason

Basch and Balthier are the best mages in the game, White and Black mages get huge bonuses to MAG, so you can cap anyone's MAG. That means you want someone with steal or Basch, who's otherwise only really good as an Archer.

Breaker damage is based off of VIT, of which Basch has the worst by the way.

I completed both vanilla and izjs. Sure some hunts are tricky and Yiazmat is a bitch but it's nothing you can't work your way around with anything. Well maybe you couldn't do Yiazmat with nothing but white mages but that was hyperbole, the point is you don't need to go minmax autistic mode to do everything the game offers you, at all. That is a good question. I might be retarded, since I didn't actually see him fight the final boss to know if it happens. However, he is one of the top speedrunners for the original game, so if anybody would know, it would likely be him. The major thing is, you could probably go the entire game without seeing a spell queue effect, and that's what's important.

I've also heard that the Zodiark fight is terribly bugged, but nobody's been able to confirm it so far.

Samurai seems fucking broken since it scales with MAG and STR, but limited legendaries weapons will maybe make that less broken. This could all change if they balance the stats too.

Monk, Knight and White Mage all get Curaja, atleast one a party is optimal. You want the DEF lowering technicks from Archer/Hunter, and Hastega from Time Mage/Machinist is extremely nice. Red Mage is probably just better than Black Mage even with the queue changes.

It's OK. Hunts are the best part. The whole game leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, though. Not because of the game, per se, but the drama during its production and wondering what could've been. Pic related sums up FFXII pretty well.

By the way, the International Zodiac Job System, I.E. "Zodiac Age" has been available online for years in english and is no different from this cash cow re-release. I suggest you pirate it first, and even if it somehow is your favorite shit ever (nothing wrong with that), yer money is going to the people that have been killing careers and IPs for almost two decades.

Pro tips from someone who played the shit out of vanilla.

You need 1 healer, having a second can help with harder fights.

Buffing is extremely helpful.

You absolutely want one job with access to remedy 3, some late game fights will drive you crazy otherwise.

Experiment with combos of spells, you can do some crazy stuff. A simple but favorite is for your main tank dps use bravery, haste, and berserk and watch him wreck virtually everything. Also reflectga, then usee aoe spells on yourself for 9 spell hits at once.

This game is generally piss easy, so choose whatever jobs sound fun. Sure having optimal jobs gear will help with a couple end game bosses, generally the other 90 percent is playable even with the weakest jobs.
Also use jobs on whatever character you want. Their innate stats are so minor from each other, its actually stupid to pick a job for a character in this game just because the have slightly better stats in an area, or slightly faster animations.

And when you fight gilga as a hunt, make sure to steal from him for the best combo accessory.

You can give everyone whatever you want since gear matters more than innate stats but you can do whatever you want.

Highest stats:

HP: Basch
MP: Penelo
Strength: Vaan/Basch/Ashe
Magick: Ashe
Vitality: Fran
Speed: Balthier

The margin between these stats are super small though, on a range of like 1-5

It helps out but the thing with Penelo is that white mages rely on their strength stat for their damage for a decent portion of the game. This is especially relevant if you pick White/Time Mage as Penelo has the worst strength stat in the game and slower than normal animations with crossbows.

Just picked this up at gamestop. How is it? I played the first couple hours of this as a kid but this ff was a bit more in depth compared to fix which I played the crap out of as a kid. Now that I am older I can play it and actually know what is going on.

Also, the game stop version comes with a nifty download code thing that let's me download either ff spirits within, advent children, or kingsglaive on ps4 digital for free. Definitely not getting spirits within. Which is better, advent children, or kingsglaive? (Yes, I did play 7 and 15)
