How was Nintendo able to make a better open world game than the competition?
>>
By convincing their fanboys that it's actually better while it's not.
>>
they didn't
it's a fucking zelda game of course it sold well
>>
by focusing on gameplay
>>
>>383580325
It isn't it's just named Zelda
>>
because they made a platformer in the 1980s and a few games about catching monsters

well the first step was being an ACTUAL open world game unlike 90% of the trash that gets passed off as open world but is actually tunnel loaded discrete zones

by focusing on Gameplay rather that pretty visuals

The world felt less-empty than most. Despite what /v/ says (remember, /v/ hates video games), the world had a lot of things to do. I had trouble just going to my next main objective without finding a gorillion stupid things on the way to distract me. It's a good game with a lot of other entertaining things to do other than the main story. My biggest gripe is that the soundtrack was the laziest zelda soundtrack that probably has ever existed. They really REALLY dropped the ball with that.

It actually felt like an open world

you take that back faggot
we didn't need yet another overproduced big orchestral arrangement of unimaginative themes done so over the top they just become soulless and sterile

BotW had one of the best soundtracks in the series, understated and minimalist music, punctuated with hardcore freeform jazz

It's a handcrafted world and not something that was for large parts just procedural generated. So they were able to fill the world with actual interesting stuff and landmarks that had actual thought and reason behind it. They also give you way more freedom than other open worlds do.
>>
>>383581413
The OST is good but its unimaginative. There's not a lot of stand out tracks outside of Hyrule Castle and few select songs.
>>
Breath of the Wild taught me how to have fun again.
>>
>>383582170
>Unimaginative

It's done in impressionist style. It's not unimaginative or uninspired.

>>

WOW MORE VERY UNDERPLAYED AND FORGETTABLE PIANO MUSIC. Shit I could've written a better soundtrack in an afternoon and I can't even read sheet music.

so BoTW is the first open world game ever made?

MY CHILDHOOD WAS A LIE!
>>
>>383582250

It's the laziest zelda soundtrack by far. The game is great. The soundtrack needed a lot more work. I think they must have already spent the music budget on koroks at that point or something.
>>
>>383582316
>reading comprehension
>>
>>383582241
That doesn't make it memorable.
>>
>>383580325
They've had the past few decades of open world games to study and figure out what to do and what not to do.
Even then I still think BoTW has some annoying flaws and I wouldn't consider it the best Zelda game, it's pretty damn good though.
>>
>>383580325

They did it by getting Monolith Soft to help design the open world.
>>
>>383580325
Oscar bait. Where other companies want to make a profit on every single game, Nintendo has an ecosystem to sell. They get to put more effort into one game than would normally be financially viable.
>>
>>383582442
Some tracks are pretty memorable
>>
>>383580325
By not doing anything different, but having the most brainwashed, delusional, rancid fanbase imaginable.
>>
>>383580501
Are you seriously deluded to the point where you think the game wouldn't have been hailed as a success had it not been Zelda?

Need I remind you of the countless hours of unique, hands free, gameplay from countless different participants that was the result of their E3? With everyone having a unique experience?
Any game that could have pulled that off would have been praised to the heavens by the industry.
>>
>>383582442
It's very memorable. In fact, I would go so far as to call the composition genius. It's basically just an impressionist remix of the classic Zelda songs we're all familiar with. I'm no expert on music theory though so I will let this guy explain it more eloquently than I ever could.

>>383582372

When you have to post an entire video explaining the music to defend your position that must mean the music is pretty fucking looked down upon overall honestly. It's like all that retarded shit in art galleries that has a huge gobbledygook explanation to convince you that it's somehow deep and meaningful when it's just shit.
>>
>>383582686
>hur dur I have no idea how statistics work
>>
>>383582686
That's because they aren't. Witcher 3 is just Witcher 2 with a larger playing space, that doesn't make it open world. You might as well call San Andreas an RPG.
>>
By putting the Zelda branding on it. Instead of being more scrutinizing (like the Diablo fanbase over D3) that buys them a lot of leeway with the fans. If you can get over the OMG ZELDA hurdle, it has all the same problems of it's competitors. It's a solid game but it's just following the open world paint-by-numbers guide.
>>
>>383582827
>NO STOP POSTING ARGUMENTS!!!
The literal only place I heard much complaints about the sound track is /v/.
>>
>>383582614

It truly is a modern Skyrim.
>>
>>383582873
>open world paint-by-numbers guide
An older version of the guide. BOTW does not guide the player in one straight line unlike most modern open worlds
>>
>>383582927
Skyrim is a modern oblivion
Breath of the Wild is more like a modern morrowind in terms of open world structure
>>
>>383582827
I'm just trying to demonstrate that just because the theory goes over your head doesn't mean that it doesn't have value. Unless you're familiar with music theory yourself, in which case I would be surprised if you didn't recognize the techniques being used.

We can all agree that it sounds nice, and that while yes, it is a break from the romantic and modern style Zelda and so many other games have used in the past, it's still good. It's just a different style that isn't used in videogaming much.
>>
>>383582885

If it was good or memorable you wouldn't have to post a whole video explaining to everyone why they need to consider it good or memorable. If it actually was either, it would be self-evident and we wouldn't be arguing about it. FFS zelda 1 had a better soundtrack and that was just 8-bit beeps and boops.
>>
>>383583117
But it is memorable. The main theme is one of the best pieces of videogame music of all time. And there are countless other wonderful pieces of music in the game. Just a few examples would be Sidon's theme, Kass's theme, Karakiko Village, Guardian battles, among others.
>>
>>383583029

>MUH MUSIC THEORY

Fucker, I have an MFA in fine art so I know how full of shit ANYONE is when they talk about MUH _____ THEORY! IT'S GOOD UR JUST TOO MUCH OF A PHILISTINE TO UNDERSTAND IT!!1 Yeah no. It's shit. You're probably just totally tone-deaf which is why you can't tell that it's shit.
>>
>>383583117
We still would because it's a simple matter of preference. There are plenty of memorable tracks, even the more subdued ones like lost woods stick

It's an impressionist remix of Dragon Roost Island.

I don't see what's so hard to understand. Literally every piece is like this.

>You might as well call San Andreas an RPG
yeah calling San Andreas an RPG won't anger anyone.

BTW i've been playing the game since 2005 or so but I'm still at level 1, is there a way to get to level 2?

You're allowed to like the soundtrack anon, but I'm also allowed to be of the opinion that the bulk of it was very lazy compared to the previous ones. At least Hyrule Castle theme was good.

>>
>>383580325

>>
>>383584096
I'm not that guy you originally argued with, I think BoTW's soundtrack is very understated and most of it is pretty forgettable. Hyrule Castle was rad as fuck, and I also enjoyed the shrine theme, the shrine battle theme, and the guardian battle. But yeah, everything else is pretty limp.
I just thought you were some faggot bluffing, but here you are backing your claim up, so respect to you.

Come to think of it I don't even know what I'd consider my favorite Zelda soundtrack, they all have highs and lows. But some of the shit in Link's Awakening always struck a chord with me.
>>
>>383584169
There are a shit ton of quests, contracts, monsters lairs, bandits camps,.... aside from the campaign.
>>
>>383580325
Because most open world game aren't actually open world, just a big space with symbol on your map.

Open world, suggest pure exploration and wonder, deconstruction and story skip, which is why Botw allow.
