Got the enhanced editions a while back. What's the best class to play in this game? Kind of want to go paladin but not sure if I want to be lawful good either. Can you change classes and alignment in the 2nd?

Alignment isnt an issue in the old games, a Paladin MC has no issue with party members being evil or doing stuff like pickpocketing and lockpicking.

if you do go Paladin your best bet is the Inquisitor Kit, the majority of really strong enemies in this game are mages and Inquisitor specializes in fighting against magic, you also can get pic related one of the greatest weapons in the game.
Wizards are insanely strong because of how high the levels go in BG2 and you start around level 8 skipping the wizards shit low levels.

You lose the class, becoming a tier 3 fighter instead, but is not really a big deal unless you play like a braindead.

you dont go around murdering people but there's nothin stopping you from having a thief pick a lock entering the house and fighting the guards/inhabitants who are hostile to you.
it's when you go out of your way to attack non-hostile npc's that you'll have issues.
there's a good few houses in BG2 where you can just waltz in kill everyone thats hostile and come out with some insanely strong gear.

your rep is easy to maintain by doing sidequests, keep in mind that evil party members wont stick around in a party with really high rep, neutral are fine either way and good wont be in a low rep party.

you can mod the game so party members dont care about your rep, also note that some specific npc's take issue with others and wont party with them for long until eventually they fight to the death, for example Keldorn and Viconia will eventually fight and Minsc will eventually rip Edwin a new one, again this can be modded out.
