The softness of the R is really just a "how italian is your italian" question.

Personally, I have go with the 100% CANON Bob Hoskins "british guy doing his best stereotypical brooklyn eye-talian" accent. Most in-game marios sound more like some kind of wacky italian chef from a pasta sauce commercial. Funny, but it comes across as 100% cartoon italian, and 0% new york plumber... so basically missing out on a full half of his deep SMB1 backstory.

Aluminum / Aluminium is actually a really weird one, because its discovery and commercialization came after american english had already diverged from english english. Not only that, it was separately patented and marketed by different people on either side of the atlantic, under different pronunciations AND different spellings. Both groups pronounce it phonetically for their spelling, and it's tough now to say who's right.

Anything Japanese in origin is consistently mispronounced. It's a little ironic, because English phonology is really complex compared to Japanese. The only Japanese syllables that might be difficult for English speakers to pronounce are anything in the ry- line. (e.g. "Ryuu" is a single-syllable word)

Well, now, yes they use the english alphabet. And the english language for everything that's not a proper noun. But if you want to ask a question like "Why is the name of X spelled funny?", you generally need a little historical context.
