There's big changes to the tone and setting and order of events:

1. The Catholic Church is evil and ordered Lisa's execution. Who exactly ordered her execution is left vague in the games.
2. It adds several Catholic characters who are EVIL, who fight Trevor. Remember that level where you fought Priests? Yeah, me neither.
3. Trevor is a drunken swearing drift less anti-authority loser who just wanders with no sense of purpose. Game Trevor has a quest.
4. Show Trevor doesn't seem religious while Game Trevor starts his quest with a prayer at a ruined church.
5. Game Trevor starts out on a quest to get to Dracula's Castle. Show Trevor just goes to the town over with no quest.
6. Grant appears to be removed from the story.
7. The Cyclops is the only Castlevania enemy to appear in the show, and he's not a random boss but can petrify and is guarding Alucard
8. Sypha is no longer an agent of the Catholic Church and has a new backstory (the "Seekers" are all original to the show)

There's probably more, but I can think of more later. The simple story of "guy goes on quest, fights monsters and meets people" was changed for no reason, as you could have had all the events in the show line up with a guy going on a quest.

99% of the screentime anything Catholic was presented, it was negative. They were all kinds of cartoonishly evil. The only positive portrayl is about 5 seconds of a priest who consecrates some Holy Water, and he has no lines. It's done almost as an after thought when Ellis remembered that Vampire fiction uses holy weapons.

Yes, the story goes that the Belmonts were casted out by the church as well. Guess what? That shit is in Castlevania 3. Trevor is an outcast, his relationship with the church is only mended after defeating Dracula. This is due to Leon abandoning the church in order to hunt Dracula's minions (which basically means, the church refused to give aid).

The show is incorporating Lisa's execution and Trevor's exiling into the main storyline, drawing heavy parallels between his outlook on humanity and Dracula's. If you're going to touch on those aspects of the story you need to get into their involvement with the Church and town, hence why the entire fucking prologue is about it.

And yes, Lisa was killed by the Church in-game too. She's surrounded by priests and being burned at the fucking stake. The official lore details that she had been a victim of a witch trial. Trying to exclude the Church's role in her death in any version of Castlevania is being deliberately retarded, it's Dracula's primary motivation until the end of SotN.

The show goes out of its way to show you that the Church is not all bad. The bishop is portrayed as corrupt, even calling the head of the church heretical in his eyes. Priests who are properly ordained and aren't connected to him assist Trevor and Sypha in their quest, and their weapons are holy. The priest at the beginning standing alongside the bishop is sympathetic towards Lisa, being aware that she's not truly a witch. All the priests Trevor fights are implied to be petty thieves and mercenaries hired to be muscle for the bishop who lack a connection to God. How the fuck did you miss this?

If you think a 12 episode series can be supported by nothing but the main character walking from level to level killing their respective bosses, with those bosses not being allowed to have any embellished narrative like they did for the Cyclops, I don't know what the fuck you're looking for in this adaption. No action series I've ever watched has that minimal of a plot. They're expanding on elements from the games themselves and when they're not its because they're moving in-game events around, like mergin the recruiting of Alucard and Sypha together, and Trevors call to action coming from character development, to provide more narrative weight.

Aria of Sorrow is a must-play and usually considered the best post-SotN Metroidvania title.

Circle of the Moon is mixed. Some people love it, some people hate it. It attempts to bridge the Classic and Metroid styles of gameplay together, but for me it felt like the worst of both rather than the best. The card system is neat though.

All it tells me is that they changed Sypha from a Church mercenary to a Seeker, something I'm already aware of. I'm curious to see how the show ties her back into the Church by the end of its run, since they've stated they're interested in adapting other games and all the Belnades are heavily tied to the Church. We'll see if that's handled well.
