Use a free program to learn the basics. Don't bother paying for anything until you're ready to start or publish a professional product.

I know for sure that Unity and Unreal are free. Game Maker might have some free products and there's a lot of smaller engines to check out. Failing that, just pirate it and buy a copy before publishing.
