You don't even have to like MMOs. I'm a single-player JRPG fan and I enjoyed the shit out of FFXIV. I spent hundreds of hours on the game playing through the main story mostly solo (except when dungeons required a party), and it was great. Definitely a worthwhile experience.

You can do the free trial (up to level 35), but you'll be stuck in the worst part of the game if you do that.

Honestly, this game is most fun with friends. If you don't have any or don't know how to make some, it will be a little lonely. But I've played the game solo most of the time and it's still been fun. The grind/reward ratio is great (in my opinion), having all jobs available on one character is fantastic, I appreciate the aesthetics, the OST is incredible at times, and the trials/raids are usually fun as heck. The story is worth going through once you get past the ARR-2.1 slog, and it becomes a lot more streamlined from 3.0 onwards.

It's not a perfect game and you can tell the dev team has learned a lot since 2.0 launched. Praetorium and Castrum are terrible experiences for new players, for example. But what they fuck up once they USUALLY don't fuck up again. So the devs are willing to listen, even if they hardly ever communicate with us directly.

It's a solid game. I won't say it's the best I've ever played, but I keep coming back because of what it does right.

I'm still mad that they kept cross-classing completely intact for crafters after all the trouble they went to to remove it on battle jobs, and instead just opted to vomit like 10 more crappy abilities into the already bloated crafting skill set. The role-sharing system makes more sense on crafters than it does anywhere else.

I've just gotten to level 37 as a paladin, and I can say that the dungeons are alot of fun to me, but the filler fetch quests in MSQ are pretty atrocious. The amount of stupid shit you had to do to fight Titan in particular was really getting to me.
Fortunately it feels like the plot is slowly starting to pick up.

I've mentioned that I parse to figure out who to give Balances to, and to suggest improvements (DPS is kind of low, please pick it up/healers are over healing by a lot, please hold back a little). People have gotten snippy about being told to git gud but if I've ever been reported for parsing, nothing's ever come of it. It's not spastic and twitchy, but it's not exactly slow at max level either. The GCD not only benefits people with high latency, it allows the dev team to have more mechanically interesting fights. So there's a trade-off. Also, some classes are better about feeling active than others. MCH, NIN, BRD, and RDM always have you doing something. Other classes like MNK and BLM are less opportunistic.

Depending on where you're at, there might be light at the end of the tunnel. The ARR quests are a slog up until after 2.4 or so; after that the narrative becomes tighter and you're sent on far fewer pointless quests.

You go back to Gyr Abania and travel to take it to Garlemand personally, taking a slight detour with the M (Seeker) tribe and Lakshimi along the way. You start invade the Castrum north of Ala Ghanna and just as things go wrong, Estinien shows up and blows up the canon that's going to fuck your shit up. You win grats.
Conrad, leader of the Ala Mhigan resistance dies and tells Lyse to lead the people. She's not any more qualified to do so since the start of the story but whatever.
You sneak into the Castrum, rescue Krile
and find out about Allagan experiments on people. They're investigating the Echo and giving their soldiers ultra powers using what they've learned, though the boosted soliders suffer some severe physical side-effects. Then you go to the Lochs, sneak around and infiltrate the castle, kill the big bad,
kill him again, and boom you're done. You captured Fordola at some point too. Meanwhile Zenos' dad is plotting shit with white Ascians and of course there's more work to be done once Garlemand decides they've had enough of your shit.

Been a MNK main since I started playing and while the job is still okay at a basic level, the SB changes really didn't help anything. Riddle of Fire feels like ass since it fucks with the natural rhythm of the job and I suspect was added just so MNK players could see big numbers, even though a fully buffed Tornado Kick is still not even as strong as a completely unbuffed Midare Setsugekka. Riddle of Earth sucks and there are barely any situations where it will actually save your stacks since boss ults tend to be ridiculous 30+ second affairs. Tackle Mastery is the most pointless trait in the entire game.

Deep Meditation and Brotherhood are fine but add nothing to the class since chakra generation is completely random, so it's effectively nothing more than another "press when it lights up" oGCD attack, of which MNK already has several.

The core of the class is still there but they did nothing to fix the problems (Tornado Kick, One Ilm Punch, Arm of the Destroyer, Any Fists stance besides Fire) and the stuff they added either doesn't help at all or just makes the job feel worse.

WoW's playerbase is more endgame focused and more cutthroat. Even normal difficulty raid pugs will ask for achievement links and cut underperformers. Pretty much every serious guild will require logs in their app.

XIV is more lax in comparison. "Learning groups" are more common and despite damage meters existing people are less likely to be called out for playing like shit. To that end I think the games actually attract different kinds of people.

I played from release and suffered from the queues you had to login-bot for hours to actually get in. Hit max level with my Scholar (very fun class stuck in a mediocre MMO) and grinding primals, which you alrrady knew, was the only endgame it had so I quit.

I'm guessing the reason is because they want to strictly control how long it takes to gear up from normal raids. If you could get a whole gear piece from each boss each week, plus tokens, you could get a full set of gear in 2, maybe 3 weeks, whereas with the current system it's a minimum of 5. In Savage it's harder because of the 1/2 chest system which effectively prevents you from running more than once per week to try and get a particular drop.

It all depends on the fight. Sometimes, like in Susano ex, there are many tank swaps so who's formally mt/ot doesn't really matter. In Lakshimi ex, you have to keep track that you're 2nd on the enmity list and keep an aoe from the rest of the party. In other fights, you have to take care of the adds.

Still, leveling to 60 is faster than it's ever been. EXP gains in old content have gone up, EXP boosts are easier to come by on gear, and PotD trivializes the process for as long as you're willing to grind the same ten floors over and over and over again. At that point you only need the bare minimum so WHM is out and SCH is in. Xaela get to be children of Azim and Nhaama because Azim made himself a mortal Xaela according to the fags at the Dawnthrone, and yet they still imply that Nhaama inhabits a Xaela as well. Xaela own the entire Au Ra homeland, and they get an entire zone with multiple settlements, Aetherytes at two of the major ones, and buildings that you can enter, as well as dialogue references to you being a Xaela, and a good dungeon. Raen get a shitty little bubble under the sea that doesn't have a single building you can enter, no dialogue acknowledging if you're an Au Ra or a Raen, and a shitty dungeon that's supposed to be their castle that they also got cucked out of by demons. On top of that, they don't help at all as members of the resistance, only the Xaela do.

In regards to the lore:

The Au Ra have been getting some stellar treatment from the lore team. Will any of the other races get something similar, or will we have to go out of our way to cobble bits and pieces from the MSQ, side-quests, and side material such as the lore books? I don't give a shit about role-playing but XIV's world seems to have a lot of thought and care put into it and I'd like to know more about the history of my character's people. Especially since we've run into a few suncat tribes and there's almost nothing about moon cats other than they don't really gather and it's a matriarchal society.

The bubble Raen are a tiny, tiny minority that went underwater in secret. Most Raen joined Doman and Hingan groups during their warring states period to fight as mercenaries, and later integrated with those societies when they finally calmed down.

The Kojin got an Aetheryte because they're going to have their own quests, so it makes sense for them to be easy to access.

The Raen felt like an odd blip in the story, like they were supposed to be part of a larger segment that got cut for whatever reason. Perhaps they just needed to be there as an excuse to have the 63-64 dungeon? I hope as the patches go on we see more of them, and get more of their story. The Xaela got their turn to shine- the Raen should be next.

I'm sure we'll see more of our white-horned friends either later in 4.x or during 5.0 as new areas are added. Asking you to be patient for 2 years is unreasonable and unrealistic but it's the only thing to do right now. SE takes turns playing favourites so their turn will come.

No they aren't. There's literally more Roegadyn and Lalafell in Kugane than there are Raen. One of the three Au Ra I even found in Kugane disappears after you do her little quest with the merchant.

You can pay exactly as much as you need to for the sub, no more, and have the same exact options available to you. The only things you won't have are special outfits, mounts (which are identical to in-game mounts in terms of speed and ability to fly), and minions to show off in the idle town.

The game showers you in all that stuff if you play it, you just won't have the cash shop versions. I wish the cash shop didn't fucking exist but it has never made me feel like I need to use it to enjoy the game.

At the risk of angering the Raen autist ITT, I'd be happy with a compromise:

- include lore-heavy sidequests for the underrepresented races/clans
- have text, somewhere, chronicling their history
- include a rep from the rare races in the story for a time and use them as a vehicle to deliver lore while they're around ("Gee, NPC-kun, why do I hardly ever see others of your kind?")

The only caveat being that SE's pace at adapting and changing things is glacial so it may well be a millennium before anything like this actually happens.

Yeah that's what I mean by the suncats being the most culturally relevant subrace in the MSQ until Azim Steppe. For Titan you go there, learn about the U tribe, become a hunter, understand their structure, and then get their Nunh's approval and move on.

Then the relevance pops up again in a very minor way in Y'mihtra in HW, she's Y'shtola's half sister since pretty much any same-generation female in a tribe is a half sister.

And the M' tribe pops up, but they don't really do anything of particular significance other than exist near the Qalyana.

The equivalent for the Xaela would be if you were to roll up to the M tribe, beat up their Nunh, fuck Naago, and then force them all to storm Ala Mhigo with you.

If you look at HW you have an entire area devoted to lower standing Ishgardians, half an area for Chocobo hunters, two half areas for dragons, half an area for Moogles, half an area for Vanu, etc.

I made an alt on a different data centre to test my connection and to try playing as a different race, all after I got 60 on every DoW/DoM/DoH/DoL class on my main. Some people do it for RP purposes, some people do it for shits and giggles, others do it just to live a double life. Everyone has their own reasons. The only time it's despicable is when people create alts to funnel gil/housing plots on low-pop servers so they can flip the houses for more gil and crash some markets. That's pretty rare though.

But it seems on par with skipping B4 altogether, and that's with a good amount of thundercloud procs squeezed in. Unfortunately I don't have any parses, since I'm a console peasant, but the SSS dummies have been yielding mostly the same results between the two.
