4. start trying to read really easy manga while looking up unknown words and adding them to the custom deck
5. keep reading faster and better little by little, while watching anime until you can turn off the subtitles

this is basically what I did, steps 1 to 4 took two months, getting comfortable reading and listening after that around 2 years

try be constant and to have fun with it and not obsess too much otherwise you will give up out of impatience

If you learn Japanese because you like Jap comedy and variety shows, for instance, you're probably going to end up knowing who Beat Takeshi is, as he's one of the "big three" owarai dudes. If you know who Beat Takeshi is, you'll know that he is also known as a filmmaker. If you watch those films and like them, maybe you'll want to know more about Japanese film in general. Learning about Japanese film in general will lead you to Ozu, Kurosawa, etc. Suddenly you're out of "trashy subculture" and into "legitimate art" with nice Criterion labels and academic criticism.

Well how I learned English was by playing a FUCKTON of video games as a kid and watching cartoons. In terms of vocabulary, first I'd learn a bunch of really basic vocab (things like clothes, body parts, car, dog, food, water-shit you'd use on a daily basis or so) and try to think of those words in my head as opposed to the native language equivalent. Sticky notes on the items with the word also help. Besides that, practice and getting into situations where you could practice actually writing and saying the words. A language buddy helps. IDK about jap though, I just took a single class at university and as I said I struggled with memorizing the characters (although I didn't try super hard or practice often at all to be honest. I neglected it if anything).

Learning to read a new language is easy af

Took only 3 months to get the gist of traditional chinese comics. Japanese kanji is closely related to traditional chinese aswell, some words changed but i still get the general idea of what is written down.

People just overwhelm themselves about speaking the language + learning to write and read it all at the same time.

There is plenty of people who learn just to read the language. Many linguistic papers are written in german, so i learned to read that after a certain point of having zero sources for my papers.

Just do flash cards everyday + learn some syntax and stop being a little bitch about speaking it. Unless youre going to Japan to weeb out, learning the writing system(s) is well enough to play weeb games.

I just use youtube music since I already pay for play music, which includes youtube red, which lets you download music to listen to offline in the music app, and since I've been listening to japanese music on youtube for years, it gives me some pretty good recommendations.
