The idea probably came from Ragnarok, I think novice had its own advanced classes separate from specialized classes.
Can't really think of any other MMOs where it was viable.

I swear, whenever someone poses a question, Dragon's Dogma is always a valid answer. Hybrid builds have balanced stats so they can change classes when the need arises. They tend to have higher defenses than characters that went 190 levels as a single class, the compromise being that their damage stats are slightly lower. A lot of magic spells actually scale off physical strength in tandem with magic so a hybrid would deal superior damage while also being bulkier.

The chinese are really smart, they released this and saw people torrenting the series with fansubs. What did Tencent do? hired the fansub guys and uploaded the stuff to their youtube account. Each episode gets like 600k views which means a lot of profit.

Hiring the fansubbers was pretty smart though, but I guess Tencent can afford to do shit like that.
All the money they get from that series comes from mcdonalds sponsoring the shit out of it.
The real smart move is them using irl locations for every scene.
You can actually go to area of the city the show takes place and it's 1:1, the local mcdonalds probably made a killing.

It's untrue in PvE because you are operating against dumb AI where you just mash your strong sides against AI's weak sides, so more than anything the class at its best matters.

PvP could go either way but specialized builds still mostly do better.
