Fox constantly reminisces about his father and enemies have constantly used memories of his father to torment him (see Pigma's taunts, and more importantly, the final boss of Assault). Fox wants to live up to his father's legacy and makes remarks every now and then wondering about his father. As for Krystal, removing her would not make sense as she's already now dating Fox and has already taken Peppy's place. There's no proper story way to make her leave for any good reason, and as Assault showed, she has the capability to "sense" things and in a way read peoples minds (such as her reading the Aparoids thought patterns). It was not well utilized in Assault however, but should a sequel return with her still in them, it has the chance to utilize her abilities in a meaningful way, such as perhaps by being able to sense invisible enemies or enemies hiding underground that are completely biological in nature for example. Also story purposes of reading minds, which is partially hinted at on a Sm4sh trophy.

Star Fox's biggest issue is linearity and just generally having an identity crisis. Nintendo tries to shake things up with motion controls and gimmicks but honestly something like Star Fox Adventures is probably the best place to work from. I agree about the cockpit view. I found the second screen to be useless for the most part in 0. It was a pain in the butt the first time through the level having to look down to find the best place to aim at enemies with weak spots and after playing through a level a couple of times it became easier and quicker to just aim at the weak spot using context and experience. What if they made a mp focused spinoff game that was like Warhawk?

They could have an adventure mode thats a mix between dragonforce on sega saturn and starfox command on ds. Instead of a huge number of small maps make a big one with an expanding story with online features letting people drop in on certain missions. You would control starfox and the cornerian fleet.

Then add another linear traditional mode; finishing it would unlock another linear story centered around starwolf and finishing both would unlock a final extra mission to wrap up the story.

Finishing all modes unlocks special singular missions in various points in the timeline like a mission with james mccloud.

Have online multiplayer pvp and score attack.

Shitty people didn't like Assault. Assault innovated. It was a pretty good game and gave the series a nice variation. But all the fanboys got upset it wasn't a 100% on rails shooter. Krystal is whatever, but with time she could have been taken in the right direction.

Assault's versus was amazing too.

We need Assault 2 with the on foot mechanics being something like mass effect or earth defense force. Arwing controls need to be tightened up and Landmaster should feel more like a heavy tank and less like a fast car with a laser on top.

Everything up to the first Assault can stay canon.

It was just a shitty outsourced arcade multiplayer game that Nintendo forced the devs of to slap on an extremely rushed, bad singleplayer game to push it out to the console masses, and it shows. Multiplayer is really good, however, so it has that.

I replayed the game recently and the on foot sections aren't the most polished thing. They do suck. But it would have been a better direction to go in than what we got from Zero.
We need the branching paths from the older games, or something like how SF2 has you fly around the map handling threats, but have it mixed in with stuff like on-foot. Instead of your arwing just transforming into a chicken.

Huh, for how much I dislike Assault this actually is pretty indisputable. Why Nintendo thought constantly switching between two different screens was a good idea I will never know, it reminds me of Other M and how you had to keep fumbling the controller around to switch to first person and disorient yourself every time you wanted to fire missiles.

I would still rather them make a proper sequel to 64 though, fuck this on-foot noise

I wouldn't mind a game without any of the on foot stuff, but I did like it a bit in Assault. What I really wish they'd stop doing is making levels that are all just callbacks to 64. In 64 the Sector Z missile attack is one of my favorite fucking levels, as a kid it felt really tense to me, but it didn't need to be in Assault. But it's a staple nintendo thing to do that kind of shit. Just give us the old path system, with new areas and new mission ideas without deviating too much from the way the arwing works.
