Not really anything, all it takes is a lot of time and dedication. Self-learning a language like Japanese might be even more difficult so if you think you can just easily pick up the basics and understand the game you're probably wrong.

On the other hand having a goal (understading the games) probably makes learning more enjoyable and playing through the games and realising you understand more and more of the language as you progress is pretty rewarding.

I taught myself Korean over the course of 2 years and when I visited Seoul quite a few people were surprised and seemed impressed that a black foreigner could speak Korean. Starting is probably the most difficult step because you actually just have to repeat the moonrunes until you know them by heart.
