Isn't the software behind PS2, PS3, PS4 etc. made by exactly the same people? How is backwards compatibility not a minimum requirement? All they have to do is build on top of what they already have, and older games won't need to fully use the new hardware, just as much as they used on the previous machines.

I mean I always thought consoles were just small computers + operating systems that focused solely on video games.

You are somewhat wrong here. At least it is not possible for a PS4 to be backwards compatible with PS3 games as these are made to run on the Cell processor which is used in the PS3. And as Sony went back to x86 processor architecture with the PS4 it is effectively impossible to run PS3 games on the PS4.

I don't know about PS2 and PSX though, couldn't tell you about compatibility with those.

Speak for yourself. I love a console that lets me play the previous gens games on it, it's one of the reasons why I keep my Wii-U as not only can I play Wii games on it but it upscales them.
