As someone who has never played this series before, is there anything wrong with starting with this collection? Did square mess them up somehow or are they fine?
They had some bugs at first, but now they run well. Also the only version in sexy 60 frames per second.

From what I've heard, due to the change from the original versions' 30 fps to the collection's 60, a lot of the physics are a bit buggy and sometimes don't work right at all, causing a good deal of frustration for people both old fans and new comers.
Also there are parts of the collection's games that are still in 30 (ex. Battle of 1000 Heartless) that can be a bit jarring to play after the rest of the game being at 60.

A lot of things have been fixed but there are still some issues. For a first timer it shouldn't really be a problem.

It was patched. It's a good way to play the games.
Ok here's a little backstory
>PS2 emulation days
>KH1 and 2 menus run in 60 FPS
>Games are hacked so that they can run at 60 FPS
>However the games are now filled with bugs
>So 30 FPS becomes the standard
Years pass by and 1.5/2.5 come out for PS3 and they're 30 FPS but everything is fucked.
Load times, various glitches, etc...
The day 1.5+2.5 came out it had fixed a lot of bugs but it was still messy
Today it is the fastest and most stable version of all the games.
The price is pretty good as well, Square did a really good job with it overall.

I finished this collection last week, first time playing the series, it's been patched and it works pretty good.
My only advice is to play KH2 before watching 358/2 Days, in the collection you'll see KH2 listed after Days but that wasn't the release order and you might get some things spoiled.

Play them on Proud or Critical. You'll come out much more satisfied by the end of the game with what you went through.
