What are you talking about? All their attacks can be evaded and with a gud weapon you can kill it in ~10 swings.
Even if you get hit, by that point you should have enough armor and hp to easily tank a few hits.

I just started and I find this is the case as well. I'm using the quickstart guide on gamefaqs for my first playthrough and it has really helped, but its only good for 2handed str builds. If I was trying to make a mage, I would probably be fucked.

What I learned so far though from the guide is to level up str or dex before raising your weapon proficiencies too high. Dont waste LP on usless stuff unrelated to combat early game, unless you want to be a pickpocket extrordinaire. Once you get strong enough, beat up harbour citizens, farmers, etc. Dont start using elixers or praying for stats until 60 str or so. Sell shit you dont need. Lots of other small stuff. I would have been fucked without this guide because there is very little explanation to stats or what anything does in the game, unless you know from gothic 1.

Since the most important fights, the dragons, can be easily cheesed with scrolls, no. The power leveling is not a must. I always feel highly compelled to do it, but you don't have to. You can easily beat the final boss as a level 1 scrub using the demon summon or rain of fire scrolls.

Just search for 2H, 1H, Str, Dex and find the variables that are equal to your character's stats you want to fix. I guess you can cheat even more and just add stats you shouldn't have, but that seems boring.

Mages aren't hard, you just have to build yourself to be a decent fighter because you'll be using melee or archery (very powerful) to do the heavy lifting for the first 3 or 4 chapters, after which you can sort of start to rely more on magic.

If you want, you can use an exploit to save skill points. Level up your skills and/or stats by 4 and then do the investments of 5 at a time. The amount of LPs you need to skill up after, say, investing 30 points goes up by twice the amount, but if you level your skill to 29 and then do the investment of 5, you don't have to pay the double amount for the 4 points that go over. It's a nice way to save LPs so you won't feel too starved for skill points. Up to you if you do it, but since it doesn't require any cheat programs or console commands, I consider to be fair game.

Cool. Well, maybe it'll help someone else ITT. While the LP trick isn't a must, I highly recommend it if you're playing a Mage, otherwise you'll be starved for LPs, hard. They need to spread themselves the thinnest out of all the other specs to make it work. Last time I played as a Mage I used the LP trick, leveled alchemy and saved all my pots and skill tablets until the very end. I had enough MP to cast Rain of Fire twice before running having to chug pots. I felt like I was a god with that character. Don't think it'd be possible to get a character like that if you didn't go full autism with the character building and hoarding.

Dunno what the benefits are for beelining the weapon asap. You'll still be doing poor damage anyway since you won't be able to do critical hits and your moveset will be slow and clumsy against the tougher, more agile enemies that start to show up by then.

Here's another protip I learned when playing a Mage, for those who are struggling. The summon skeleton goblin spell is insanely strong. You can keep summoning them as long as you have mana. I killed lots of trolls with my low level mage by spamming Skeleton Goblins and watching them whack the shits to death. An army of Skeleton Goblins are as potent at killing NPCs as they are at killing you.

not really, even the controls are different since it controls very awkwardly with KB/M. The monsters are different too: G1 scavengers are much weaker than in G2, but G1 wolves one hit kill beginners while G2 wolves are only dangerous at level 0.

Not the OP, but I just started after being sceptical of the game (because of these threads). I'm still early in the game (lvl 6), but Ill tell you what I like and dont like.

So Ill start with the good. The world is something you dont get with modern games, seriously. Its compact, vertical, and full of little secrets. This isnt some gimmick, either. It truly feels unique. The combat. At first clunky and still meh when fighting animals, is enjoyable against npcs, at least 1 on 1. The UI. A surprise love here. The lack of UI is actually nice. Having no weight limit is good. Every enemy feels like they belong. The open-endness of quests and your choices. The npcs, who literally don't give a fuck about you. The progression. I'm starting to see how my character is growing stronger after being a lowly scrublord. The guilds and apprenticships are great and straighforward. Lack of fast travel early on is good.

The negative in my opinions. Lots of these are speculation. Harsh penalties for not knowing game systems. Stats arent explained well, though I think they expect you to have played G1. Little room for error. You might need to use a guide or you may find yourself gimping your character early on or getting lost, especially with how hard notr is. Certain things like beating up npcs for 1000s of xps just isnt explained and can be missed. Finally, since enemies dont respawn, which is good, by the endgame you might have an empty world and run out of fights. This may or may not be as big of a problem as I think.

Overall, so far its been slow, but engrossing

There's only one thin that prevents Gothic 2 plus NotR from being the GOAT, and that's the leveling system.
I mean, the leveling system itself is fine, but it's dumb how you have to lug around the stat potions and tablets until the corresponding stat is at its max price, in order to maximize their efficiency. If you use a strength potion when strength only costs 1 LP to increase, you're just wasting it.
Should've had the stat bonuses on top of the 'natural' stats. That's about the only major criticism I have.

I think it's just a matter of choosing between being more powerful early and having sick stats at the endgame. When you eat those STR tablets and pots early on to be able to wield some weapon, you can put the LP in a different skill.

Paladin can learn magic but they have to suffer hard min/max wise because they need to invest in mana do cast efficient. Also Paladins focus more on one handed instead of two handed combat.
You can get the Innos Wrath as a Paladin which is the best one handed sword i guess.

The main feature of Gothic 1 and 2 was that the game is hard as fuck and you're a fucking nobody at the beginning. in Arcania there was NEVER a single moment where the game is hard. It's ALWAYS easy as fuck.

And not to mention the trash art style. Gothic 1 and 2 had heavy mysterious atmosphere and dark, unfriendly world and yet managed to be so comfy and charming.

Arcania is just generic as fuck disneyland. It's even more bland than Oblivion's art style, and that says a lot.

Why dont more games have less UI like gothic to cater to immersion and realism? You would think with all these UI less walking simulators we would have less UI in rpgs, but we actually have more. Why..

I actually installed this last week for the first time, got the dx11 mod and some other shit and it looked nice and ran well but Jesus Christ does it control like ass.

Why is that not the first thing everyone brings up, I set the mouse sensitivity as high as it would go and the camera was still soooo sluggish and the targetboxes on everything were really finicky. Fuck playing an entire game like that, uninstalled after 15min of playtime.

I gave the first game like 3 hours to get me into it but the controls are just so fucking terrible I couldn't bear with it anymore. No the game doesn't give you enough directions. Some quests literally just tell you "go to NPC called X in Novigrad" without telling you any directions, just relying on your GPS

And the batman senses are also required to do quests
