It's like someone took actual good character design and ruined it. The short shorts are ok because he's an athlete and I can kind of understand the gauntlet on one arm to protect him in a fight while allowing the other arm free range of motion, but the second extended pant leg is fucking stupid and the baggy open shirt would just be a hindrance when trying to play blitzball.

No, it is a goddamn sports uniform for a quasi-futuristic society.

This is exactly what happened. Tidus is a fake construction created by dreaming gods, who based Tidus's appearance and personality on a number of people who actually existed, mostly pic related. Shuyin serves as the base for Tidus, but since the gods have been sleeping for so long and forgot what real Zanarkand is really like, Dream Zanarkand, where Tidus is from, has become distorted.

Even his official concept art and dissidia design shows that Tidus was originally suppose to be some distorted, as if his clothes are disappearing from reality.

That would actually be a wonderful touch, for Shuyin's character design basically be "Tidus, but dressed by a sane person". But while there are similarities Tidus' outfit really looks like a random mashup of a billion different clothes than something that could be described as one sensible outfit that simply fell in disrepair

Its a simple case of it works for the world its set in. Titus doesnt stand out with his look as many others dress similarly. Just because the fashion doesnt match our reality or even our present 2010+ fashion senses, doesnt mean its bad design. It works in the context of the game.
