Because it's just a chunk of land to fuck around in, gives you tools to fuck around with, and throws in a handful of 'puzzles'. Doesn't push you to objectives, tell you how to do things, just lets you fuck around. I think it's something 'gamers' that were created by last gen are confused by though.
Probably the only good game Nintendo have shit out in a long time too, so Nintendo fans are relieved to actually not have a shit game they try to defend.

BotW has some of the issues which plague all open world games - enemy repetition and difficultly balancing for example. But those are minor, inevitable quibbles and never come close to overshadowing how exceptionally brilliant the game is.

But BotW get it's praise from it's focus on player agency, freedom of exploration and immersive world building.

Haters will stomp their feet in denial but there really is nothing on any platform which can touch BotW right now. There's some true next-level stuff going on in the game. Considering its running on tech not much bigger than my fone, what Nintendo achieved is astonishing.
