Tiberian Sun had pretty in-game graphics sure.

But as all C'n'C games the actual game world was hillariously stupid.
I'm not going to even bother with listing more atmospheric games: I'm just going to limit myself to RTS:

Now don't get me wrong: Tiberian Sun is a great RTS. Arguably better in gameplay and visuals than many of the above mentioned. But god the atmosphere was silly and awful.

It is. It has a lot of dark humor, but it has plenty of pretty damn dark undertones. Actually play the game. Don't just parrot the things that you heard other people around this board say. Seriously, it's pretty damn good. I know the 2D environment completely terrifies you, and it will take a good while to learn how to use a mouse and keyboard, but I promise, it worth trying.

Anyone here kinda like ultra gloomy settings? Like "Oh shit, everything's FUCKED." Kinda gloomy. Makes me wish that Valve had gone with their original vision of Half-life 2. Where the whole is basically fucked five ways to Sunday and has left humanity in a utterly hopeless situation.
I just kinda like them for it's dreariness and how humanity copes in such a situation.

I think the Owellian distopia inspired by East European socialism easthetic was far, FAR more interesting as a theme and as artistic direction. We might lament a lot of features that HL2 has lost, but I think the increased focus and more importantly the actually gorgeous art direction and settings were a MASSIVE step forward.

Ultra-gloomy is usually really fucking boring in the long run. It's when you have contrast between beauty and destruction, and when you have a center of reality on which your destruction is based that makes the destruction actually shine through. Something that consistently reminds you of what you lost, something that reminds you that how small you are... That is why Fallout never went overboard with the destruction aesthetics (except for 3), why Bradbury's stories like "Chicago Chasm" or "The Rock Cried Out" are some of the most powerful post-apocalyptic stories you can find, why Stalker's Zone is so much more impressive than Metro's surfaces.

BoS literally sends you on a suicide mission and even when you become a paladin they have to be almost pressured to help the people in the first game, they're super secret protector club in the sequel.
Deathclaws are legendary creatures whom nobody survived the meeting with in the first game, you have a fucking deathclaw party member in the sequel.
Ghouls are jaded assholes who treat every single outsider with contempt in the first game, they're reduced to being exploited for electricity in the sequel.
The whole of San Francisco is a meme, the whole of New Reno is a meme, those stupid fucking visions from the pothead shaman are memes, Myron is a meme, getting raped by a super mutant is a meme, sentient radscorpion and a talking plant is a meme.

Also Earth has a giant ass space portal conveniently constructed by Scrin. If Nod can manage to open it in the CnC4 then GDI will manage to do it too sooner or later. If we continue to ignore 4, there's still tons of tech left by the Scrin which GDI can use.

Actually, I've heard that a key element of changing the tone at was Viktor Antonov's visit of his homeland and a trip across Eastern Europe somewhere I think around 2000's with his brother. His visits to Sofia and Prague in particular have supposedly birthed the idea of using the East-Europan-Block desolation as a source of inspiration, rather than focusing on more America-centeric design and aesthetics. Scrin was even in the original tiberian sun, just not as a faction, there were hints. Theres even that mission where you have to defend a crashsite scrinship.

C&C3 and to a greater extent Kanes Wrath nailed the atmosphere harder than Tib Sun did because it stayed truer to Tib Dawn than the former. If you ask me Tib Sun is the odd man out in the franchise (twilight excluded)
