I don't really see a problem with the RE4 control scheme, they just need to put actual effort into making the game atmosphere truly eerie instead of just jumpscares or "travel along hallway, kill a few zombies, the move on." Mercenaries and Raid Mode kept RE5/6/Revelations alive for so long, also meant a huge replayability to the games. I can honestly say I've played RE5 and 6 more than the rest of the entire series in game hours purely because of co-op online and mercenaries.

Raid Mode was a nice step-up from Mercenaries too, to be honest Umbrella Corps should have been a Raid Mode/Mercenaries standalone game, with the full RE cast and it would have sold a shit ton.

When I was a kid I had a N64, not a PlayStation, and this ad was in an issue of GamePro I had. I used to stare it at for ages, wondering what RE2 played like, what it was all about. It looked fucking incredible.

I never got to play it until the N64 version came out, but since then it's been one of my all time favourite games, and I think that the hype I generated for it with ads like this is a lot of the reason why.

People think RE4 ruined Resident Evil but it was actually Code Veronica.

It followed a similar formula to Resident Evil games before it, but with slightly less fixed camera angles to mix it up. The game was classic RE in every sense, but it was total shit. Massive amounts of backtracking made the game feel repetitive, the Ninja Wesker and the Ashford Twins being crazy as fuck changed the dynamic of RE from being mostly about the monsters to being about the zany people that make them.

Because Capcom panicked when CV didn't do as well as their other games (even Survivor did well by comparison), they freaked out and changed the formula completely. Had CV been a good game, they wouldn't have any need to make RE4 what it was.

And the gun. Holy shit the guns. There's never really a moment in the game where you pick up a new gun and go FUCK YEAH. You did in RE1 because you saw what Barry's revolver did to a zombie and you wanted a taste of that shit. In RE2 when you pick up the fucking Desert Eagle, you remember RE1. And then you get to fucking UPGRADE it. That shit blew my mind.

In CV you get a grenade launcher, but it's dull as fuck. The zombies don't die in a spectacular gory fashion like they did in RE2. The Mangum in Chris's portion comes so late, you're already bored of the guns. And there's no shower of blood and undead brains when you blast a zombie's head with it. The zombie plays a death animation and soundbite and that's it. Wow. The AK47 was alright, but it's just a slightly more powerful MP100. And the Linear Launcher is a fucking JOKE of an endgame "YOU LOSE" weapon.

The game starts before the outbreak is so bad that you rarely/never see any living humans, and just about when the US military quarantines the city with road blocks, and about the same time the UBCS are sent in. The entire city (bar certain areas at certain times) is open and certain events happen at certain times (the truck crash in RE2, the hospital explosion, the bombing of main street, the police station zombie attack, the unleashing of the tyrants, etc).

Some objectives were more important than others, meaning that if you wanted to progress, you had to reach that objective by a certain time or you would fail. 1-3 were completely dead serious. That they were goofy was due to the amateur nature of the writing, dub, filming, actors, etc and because it's Japanese writing in English.

The "Wesker is back" plotline is one of the WORST in RE, as it tries to give RE some overarching villain that it didn't need. I'm of the mind that RE characters should never really return. It should have been other characters, other time periods, other companies, etc.
