Why is it that video games don't look much better than Crysis did 10 fucking years ago?

>>
>>383446456

>>
>>383446456

That's not vanilla crysis.
>>
Because that doesn't drive sales. Also plenty of games do look better than Crysis, you're just used to seeing heavily modded screenshots.
>>
crysis invented or implemented 90% of the stuff that makes modern games look good, and did it without worrying about optimization. So things are implementing mroe of the same stuff, but are able to actually make it run on a machine under $1200
>>
Crysis looked the way it did because it practically invented a shitload of graphical techniques that are still used today and shoved them together in one massively unoptimized package. Advancements in graphical techniques these days tend to be made less frequently and on a much smaller and subtler scale, tending more towards performance and optimization than noticeable visual effects.

Just because it has high graphical fidelity does not mean that it's a good looking game.
Frankly ps1 and NES games look better than crysis.
>>
They certainly run better than Crysis did 10 years ago.
>>
>>383446698
>>383447024
Wrong retards. Crysis was super well optimized for how it looked. Games nowadays are the ones not optimized, barely looking better than a 2007 game and still running like shit. Crysis was demanding for a good reason.
>>
>>383447024
Name five optimized AAA games released in the past 5 years on PC. You literally can't. These companies are either extremely lazy or extremely incompetent because they literally can't optimize worth Jack shit

This is true in terms of the things Crysis basically created (ambient occlusion being the most notable graphic tech that was pioneered by Crytek), but Crysis definitely wasn't unoptimized.
Crysis in terms of optimization was pretty insane, especially when you consider that the next best-looking game in 2007 looked like pic related and ran only slightly better.
>>
>>383447553
Ok actually in retrospect that wasn't what I meant to say.
I was trying to say that games with decent to good art styles look better than crysis but there were admittedly a ton of retro games with terrible art styles.
>>
>>383447589
Keep in mind the performance you're talking about was before the modern teenage mindset of anything less than 60fps being literally unplayable. I had a similar build to yours and I remember it getting pretty choppy in certain parts, but it was tolerable.

Optimization is starting to make a comeback, but only because of poor optimization from console ports causing too much fallout over the past years. Batman was really the last straw on that front.
>>

Because fewer and fewer developers are actually developing their own engines for games now. Until you see licensed engines make major strides forward, graphics are going to look very samey for years at a time.

I disagree with him on alien, it's easy to run a game when 99% of it is cramped space station corridors with not a whole lot of environmental detail.

But I think he has a point with battlefield.
What makes the game look nice isn't frostbite magic, which has historically paled in comparison to something like cryengine, but really high quality photogrammetry assets developed initially for battlefront with FAT MOUSEBUX.

Noone thinks the guy who made the vanishing of ethan carter was some graphical genius, but parts of the game look excellent due to limited usage of photogrammetry.
Now pretend disney has given you tens of millions of dollars for asset development, and you can see the advantages of this approach.

Crysis was actually poorly optimized.

Crytek initially believed that dual cores were the future so the game is not optimized at all for quads. You actually get better performance on a dual core than quad.

Furthermore, Crytek's implementation of AA was all fucked up.

Even if they didn't have the time to implement it into development, they could've patched in better allocation resources for multicore rendering. 1.1-1.21 did basically nothing for performance.

That said, I think I remember Warhead running much better. It was also a better game to boot.

No, that was Crysis 2, which did so because Nvidia wanted the game to run like shit so people would buy their new GPUs.
The ocean was also heavily tessellated, as were random objects placed around the gameworld, such as those concrete barriers with insane amounts of polys.

Games can look 100x better than Crysis did. Games can look like CGI graphics of today, but the reason why they dont is because lack of OPTIMIZATION.

A game is not gonna sell well if only the top 1% of PC gamers can play the damn game. Also you can forget about consoles--their hardware becomes obsolete by the time of their release. Xbox one X might be an outlier in this, but I'm pretty sure Msoft is selling at a huge deficit for that console.

Q6600 stock with 8GB of DDR3 and 2 8800GTs in SLI netted max settings at 1280x1024 with some pretty nasty hiccups in some parts. Mind you the 8800GT basically paralleled the 8800GTX in performance. Even the 8800GTX faced hiccups. The game was obviously developed on higher end cards than the gaming flagships of the period, and optimized for them which is precisely why people often whine about the optimization, which was poor for consumer hardware.

Future iterations of the Cryengine made massive leaps in that department which made it even more impressive. To top it off they added numerous engine features as well.
>>
Most games do actually look significantly better than the original Crysis.

>>383447589

Try running it on modern hardware. It either doesn't work at all, or performs worse because the game wasn't programmed to run on anything other than contemporary intel dual cores and nvidia GPU's.

Personally around release I played it on a Q6600 and an ATI 4850 at 1280x1024 around 30-40 FPS. I was ecstatic to play it on high settings at the time.

Same rig managed about 19 FPS at 1920x1200.
>>
>>383453836
Yeah it had massive downgrades to draw distance and LOD's. There was actually an issue with skybox textures being too low resolution in some cases.
>>
How much time was it until the game was actually playable on the highest settings? i remember everyone hyping up the 8800 GTXs only to be disappointed.

No you fucking retard
CRT's were great altogether
I'm not talking about garbage consumer CRT's here I'm talking about top tier PC CRT Monitors or Broadcast/Professional Monitors(BVM/PVM)

They had really good black levels, best colors, 0 input lag, really little input lag, great motion/really little persistence blur(at 60hz it was flickery but who gives a shit unless you're a pansy) and it was great at outputting any resolution without any upscaling and no de-interlacing dogshit

Once again you're a fucking retard. There's nothing wrong with 320x240 and you've been fooled by the display industry into thinking it's a bad resolution when in fact it's the pathetic new technology with it's shitty fixed pixels that make low resolutions(or any resolution that isn't native) shit

We're talking about graphics, not actual gameplay... The order is a game with great graphics, but a barren gameplay. That's not hard to understand...

>Why is it that video games don't look much better than Crysis did 10 fucking years ago?

Diminishing returns on the increased graphical power current hardware is capable of.

The jump from an average of having of 512 MB VRAM to having an average of 2GB (from 8800 GT to say a 680) is far more significant than going from 2GB (680) to 8 GB (1080).

Then the limiting factor of console hardware and monetary concerns means AAA and even a lot of AA and below devs will be focused on making sure it runs on the grossly inferior systems, which are often several generations (anywhere from 4-7 years) behind their PC counter parts in terms of computing and graphical power, so most developers aren't really pushing it on graphics or even games that would push the CPU with more interesting things because consoles would never be able to handle it.

DOOM, Battlefield, Overwatch, Alien Isolation, MGSV TPP

Fallout 4 is looks pretty fucking terrible for the most part without decent grass and tree mods, like overgrowth, regrowth, etc. The game feels so much different and far more immersive when you're sneaking around the bush and everything isn't completely out in the open like in the bare vanilla setup.

Funny how simply tweaking the lighting, colour pallet, improving textures and overhauling the audio can make an otherwise irritating game fun to once again sink a stupid amount of hours into.

>8k pipboy textures
Because fuck you, why not.

Still better than the console, oh wait, even the latest consoles would probably shit themselves even attempting any of the ARMA games. So much for that 'console power'

It's the truth though
Metal Slug in Arcade Cabinets with great RGB Monitors look amazing for a reason and it's not because "LOL CRT's were great at disguising low resolution XD" that shit doesn't even fucking make sense

Educate yourself on how great CRT's are
