Both replaced (and really well) by the mood system. Being comfortable and being in a good environment is not a basic human need. Being comfortable or in a good environment now affects the magnitude of the current mood by giving a happy score. If your sim is a specific mood, it is boosted further. If your sim is not in a specific mood, they are in a happy mood instead of "fine". Some environmental items inspire certain moods too, like some paintings make sims inspired, or confident.

Yes, it's easy to manipulate. No, it's not easy to make it bug unless your home has one of those auras that give certain moods, in which case you can go to the neighborhood editor and change that lot's auras. Besides that, obviously don't have a ton of active auras in one room. Every emotional aura can be turned off and has to be manually turned on. Some items give emotions upon doing certain actions, such as viewing an item and some work seamlessly like the "home studio" inspiration. Typically it doesn't feel like emotional auras conflict with one another unless you do something dumb, unless of course you have one of those lot traits that changes moods. Those don't work properly so don't use them.

If you want to relax, you should just play 4. There's an easy to install all-in-one pack that you can find on the Sims general on /vg/. Getting Sims 3 installed and working is kind of nightmare. And I use the term "working" very loosely.

Don't fucking buy any of them unless you're willing to throw down literal hundreds of dollars. I'm not joking. Getting up to date with either Sims 3 or 4 costs literal hundreds of dollars even if you aren't buying the stuff packs.

The biggest gripes I have with series, and it dates way back to Sims 2, is pathing, collision detection, retarded AI decisions (leaving plates in the middle of living room because someone talked to you) and overall clunkiness. With every new release instead of fixing these core issues EA focuses on some random bullshit, be it open world for Sims 3 or mood minigames in 4 (2 gimmick is going 3d so I can forgive it). Unless you love role playing stupid shit with your families or pretend you are an architect, there is a little reason to "play" these games due to these problems. I REALLY hope some day this stuff gets addressed.
