They turned the franchise into quite a cancerous fandom with how much they hammed up the presence of Vault Boy, Nuka Cola, power armor, the BoS, and the cuhrazy old-timey radio. New Vegas managed to keep it more in line with the first two.

There is nothing wrong with pipe guns, but there is no justification for older gun not being available. there are perfectly fine 200+ year old revolvers in real life. Also many pipe guns make no fucking sense design wise.

I didn't mind Fallout 3 because most of the architecture has a great brutalist vibe to it

They had to change the tone becouse the rest of the game is a huge rehash of resources. It wasn't as over-the-top with the self-referential stuff, and the map's locations were mostly ordinary places and not strange, isolated settlements with their own quirky theme attached. Also helps that they re-used the soundtrack from the first two games to give it that feeling of being in a hostile world.

No, I actually think the design, art and asethetic were improved moving forward in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Fallout 4 has some amazing concept art but it's implementation wasn't good. The quality of the gun and weapon designs in F4 took an absolute nosedive.

All were pretty garbage, though 3 at the time was a big leap forward and had appeal because it was new. NV and 4 became a caricature of the serious, it was reduced to it's base elements and then those were stripped away, any pretense of choice, roleplay, freedom or immersion were secondary, or removed entirely, to show casing zany, 'badass' weapons, unusual and wacky characters.

The earnest exploration both mentally and physically of a post-apocalyptic world where the law and order breaks down complete is nowhere to be found. Instead you have the same clutch of groups with variable faces tell you why the other is weak.

The BoS alone should shown you what has become of the series.

I would love nothing more than an isometric world to return with 2d backgrounds and a rough 3d model, revamped UI to make combat and management of party easier but hordes of dialogue and conversations without purple prose. Alas, those days are gone. We are not condemned to read, if we read at all, about an overly described building and the expression of the trans gendered woman's hairy face.

I'd argue vault boy was a step in the right direction for the franchise. Fallout needed an iconic face and I'm glad they chose something that fit the lore, theme, and aesthetic, while also remaining ambivalent to player choice (choosing the Bos as mascot would be terrible).

I actually think the super sledge always felt aesthetically out of place (not rustic, but also not industrial looking like the power fist). the new design looks sleeker and less unwieldy, while also embracing the retrofuturistic jury rigged look
