Veronica is a bit of a glass cannon at the start, emphasis on glass if you have low charisma. But if you get her a set of T-51B, an upgraded gauntlet or a chainsaw (with or without parts) she turns into a full on tank - able to soak up ludicrous damage and dishing out punches that can shred deathclaws. Really, almost every companion just needs a little something extra to get over that edge.

What persecution are you talking about exactly? I haven't gotten around to finishing 1 (played about half of it a few years back) and never started 2 but I'm looking at their wiki page right now. Says 4 groups left vault 15, 1 became shady sands, the other 3 the Vipers, Jackal's and Khan's. The Khans kept attacking and raiding shady sands, until the vault dweller wiped them all out save one for kidnapping Tandi.

Then that one survivor rebuilt the khan's, made a deal with the vault's squatters where they would share what they got from raids on NCR caravans so long as the squatters didn't give them up, only to get almost wiped out again by the chosen one.

Neither of those events make me feel pity for them. Sure, Children getting killed is horrible and should have never happened (although I still stand by my earlier statement that they would have just grown up to he more raiders.) But the Khan's have never done themselves any favours in the wastes.

i dunno on the higher difficulties and depending on how much you advance before getting real good gear, 4 can at times have a simple gunfight become a fucking warzone:

Agreed, though it's not hard to get to the Mojave outpost in my opinion. I like how she's stuffed away in some back bar when she's one of the best companions in the game. You can play it in it's entirety and never even notice her unless you do the Van Graff quest line.
