RB1 uses the combat system and dungeons of Victory instead of whatever mess of an RPG system was in HN1, and Victory's mechanics what the series has mainly stuck to since then.

HDN has a completely different battle system that is based on party turns and largely unremarkable aside from how it has a healing system where you assign percentages to healing skills and circumstances and they then have that chance to trigger when the circumstance occurs. Usually pretty good. Think of the dub for the anime Ghost Stories, which salvaged an otherwise-worthless anime into a solid, 7.5/10 comedy. Also things like Trails in the Sky, where the English team added extra dialogue for checking almost every empty treasure chest in the entire game -- a feature that didn't exist in the original Japanese.

Localization deviating from the script CAN be okay. It just needs to be done with restraint, respect, and the blessing of the original creator(s). It all depends, really. Think about the fact that the so-called "Based Tom" of XSEED basically fields this philosophy, and he's one of the people most staunchly opposed to even the tiniest changes in products for the sake of family friendliness or being PC.

I don't understand, combat system might not be perfect, but is definitely better than the classic jrpg combat and a lot of bigger games combat, i personally found it better than p5 combat, granted, everything turns into exe spam later, and bosses regenerate health which make every other strategy useless, but before you get the exe drives the system shine the most, black heart fight in rb1 was the most fun i had in rb1, and an excellent battle that made me keep going for more ,with no bullshit health regen or any other cheap stuff, too bad it doesn't stay that way the whole game
