Fluffy dinosaurs are cool. They're cute but could kick butt. If you know anything of how brutal sparrows can be you'll know this doesn't make him less deadly. Just a lot more able to be someone's pet too.
>>
>>383426949
Well, it depends on the species. There's complete feather imprints for some non-avian dinosaur species that show they were as fluffy as any extant species (some with stage 5 feathers like most modern birds, others with down feathers or feathers like those of a cassowary, and besides different varities of feathers and scales, dinosaur soft tissue repertoire included naked skin and thicker keratin structures). For example, Yutyrannus Huali was definitely fluffy from head to toe. Conversely, if you think of Tyrannosaurus Rex, two papers were released recently, one that looked at the osteological correlates (details in bone that might give clues about soft tissue) in its skull and looks like the head was featherless (I'm not sure about this conclusion but I recall the most likely interpretation was head having just skin with hornlets, bosses and other keratin structures, no scales), and another that documented skin impressions at the base of the tail, the hip and an unknown part of the neck. In other words, Yutyrannus-like T. Rex is falsified, but on the other hand, most recent reconstructions (like the one in OP) already had those areas of the body featherless and it remains the current best guess for T. Rex.

Two studies about T. Rex feather coverage made headlines recently, based on a few small skin impressions and osteological correlates in skull and the reporting in mainstream media, as usual, was far from what the actual research said. In actuality the meaning of these findings is a bit controversial, one camp points out that it was already predicted that those parts of the body weren't fluffy and that the new information doesn't change how it should be reconstructed given what we know (OPs picture for example can remain pretty much intact and it was made before these discoveries), the other camp takes them as evidence for more thoroughly scalry T. Rex. It has also been pointed out that it's possible for a species to have feathers AND scales and that it's actually not too uncommon for present-day animals to loose their fur or feathers at early stages of decomposition but while it's something to keep in mind to keep yourself from making 100% definite claims, that's special pleading if I've ever seen one.

As for "too hot", Hell Creek in the Cretaceous had climate similar to Southern France, not the African Savannah. There was a study about it recently and it actually suggested T. Rex would have taken advantage of insulation (ie. achieving thermodynamic equilibrium in which it wouldn't have had to spend energy to keep itself warm or cool itself down) but that used a low-end mass estimate of 6 tons.

Here's a good summary about the recent findings: http://markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2017/06/revenge-of-scaly-tyrannosaurus.html

And if you look at species other than T. Rex (which I assume you were talking about), there's direct fossil evidence that some of them were fluffy from head to toe, the largest being 2-ton Yutyrannus (living in climate similar to present-day central Europe with temperature sometimes falling down below freezing).

>Game's got a great setting that's unique as fuck
I've yet to buy the game when it gets low on price IF I do buy it. But from what I have seen and tested the setting is nice (even though not exactly unique) and loved the decayed buildings and stuff. My problem is that they had to add tribes everywhere and a fucking mayincatec version of Whiterun in the game and it is one of my main complains. Even more than whatever political shit they tried to cram in.

>You got any ideas?
The question offends me, it's probably easier to come up with a system that does what Horizon do but with organic creatures.
>T-rex appears
>Shoot in leg enough = cripple or critical hit
>Shoot in neck enough =death
>Body would need more hits to fall
>Head probably more than legs, but less than body
>Triceratops, if you shoot the horns deals no damage to it, but reduces the attacking damage and erases posibility of being gored to death
>Ankylosaurus, modify the system enough so the vulnerable parts are the ones on the underside.
And so on.

You claim "dinosaurs", the headline in Washington Post says "T. Rex" (and the article body links to evidence of feathers in other species no less).

But more importantly, the actual paper doesn't make that claim. It reports several skin impressions at the base of the tail, the ilium and an unknown part of the neck (totaling 30cm^3), that's it. Indeed, the paper itself adds a caveat "if partly feathered, these were limited to the dorsum".

As for the dinosaur shit, yeah. But I want something more. I want the next dinosaur game to be deep as fuck. Something truly special, with realistic gore. Dinosaurs often died with gaping wounds. Flesh ripped open. Blood all over the grass. Almost every dinosaur game makes shit bloodless.

Just stupid.

Now I can definitely see Raptors TRex etc having feathers. Their whole body and bone structure just screams bird to me. But what about the big vegitarian quadrupleds Like Stegosaurs or Brontosaurs? Did they have feathers?
>>
>>383431405
What about it? There's precious little fossil evidence of fluffy species outside group called Coelurosauria (although there were some, such as Kulindadromeus depicted in the article), no one in the know has ever argued otherwise. What the article really says is "using a statistical model, the most likely interpretation of available data is dinofuzz evolving independently in several clades, as opposed to being an ancestral trait to all dinosaurs with some groups having lost theirs", which doesn't change anything at all in how most species are reconstructed in paleoart.

Although it's not actually quite that straightforward. For example, I don't know if it's the same research, but details like whether or not you assign basal pterosaurs as fluffy (when there's evidence of presence or absence of fur-like "pycnofibers", all pterosaurs appear to have been fluffy, but there's no such evidence on ancestral pterosaurs) changes the likelihood of basal dinosaurs having been fluffy in these models. Newspaper articles aren't going to the nitty gritty probabilities and caveats and shit and are expected to present "facts" even though there isn't one.

http://markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2016/11/the-blog-post-where-i-ask-myself-should.html (also look at the comments) links to a lot of the actual research about the subject
>>

I did play it a bit on a con AND watched those leaked streams. The first time I saw the trailer I was hyped but then more info and vids came and my ability to hype was once more killed. Maybe I'll wait until price comes down, so if it is that good it would have been really worth the wait.

>Something truly special, with realistic gore.
Who says that can't be added to the system I proposed?
>Dinosaurs often died with gaping wounds. Flesh ripped open.
Apart from that being completely impossible to know paleontologically unless the bone is involved, it takes A LOT to do that kind of damage to a dinosaur. At least if you are a human.
I'm no /k/ommando but looking at the weapons cited in the other pic and knowing that a hippo (who is "merely" the third biggest land animal nowadays) is a living amphibian tank is enough to extrapolate.
If you want a hunting game with rifles sure, but don't expect spectacular goretastic wounds with just spears and arrows.
