Brian Reed, the man that did write Halo 5, has since been canned but unless 343 intends to change its direction in general then I fear that from a story standpoint, Halo will never recover.

They could go a bunch of neat directions from Halo 5. Mainly they could excuse going back to the old tech and as a result old art design because of the Guardians. It just remains to be seen if they will. Seem they are learning though as Halo Wars 2 has a perfect blend of 343 and Bungie art.

Bungie art was perfect, they were dumb for ever trying to go away from it. It was simple yet iconic. I don't really mind the new designs for vehicles and weapons, but elites and spartans looks like walking jokes now, It's fucking ridiculous

They still haven't spilled the beans and are just as tight lipped about what was going to happen with Miranda's betrayal to the Chief in Halo 2--selling him out to the covenant. Marty stopped Staten from explaining it back in 06-07; Pretty sure he kind of lied when paraphrasing Halo 3 later on. Did they ever finally give a full run down on that and Cortana somewhere?

I feel like they had some serious regrets because it was the better ending, even if it wasn't as "whole" as Halo 3's.

This is exactly what I've been saying. They should have held off a Halo 4 for at least 5 years. In the interim they should have made a ton of spin offs and branched out to different genres. The Halo universe is massive and they've relegated the majority of it to books and shorts. They could have made a bunch of great games.

Any of these could have fleshed out the Halo universe but instead they made a mainline game first. This is the main thing that gives me hope for Gears Of War as they seem to be making sure they understand the basics before trying anything radically different. Despite Gears 4 having it's faults they demonstrated they could make a game that actually felt like Gears.

I always had it in my head that it was some major thing that was going to happen long after John was back on Earth. Because after that point Halo 2 and 3's plot is essentially the same as far as people know. But then why would Marty stop Staten from explaining it, saying they shouldn't because it "didn't happen", when later on it's basically just a shorter Halo 3 nothing major, nothing special. That never made sense to me.

Somebody said it would have given Halo 2 an explosive ending.

A Destroy All Humans style covenant reach/ first contact game

A spin-off tactical shooter where you play as an average marine trying to keep his squad alive in the early days of the war. Get darker than the rest of the games, like an actual war story set in space -- either that or make an ODST game that's actually reminiscent of that kickass trailer Halo: ODST had

A game where a new alien species arrives, and the game adds a mechanic wherein you have to do side missions to gain the allegiance of former Covenant races like the grunts and jackals. Doing side missions bags you alien allies for future missions who can help you with hordes of friendly grunts and jackal snipers. Just try to incorporate allegiances somehow. They should really take into account that in-universe the Covenant is now fractured and that there are dozens of alien races who don't know what to do now that the old Covenant is dead.

An rts spinoff that's actually good.

A game reminiscent of the first halo that goes all out on the combat sandbox idea and always gives the player a multitude of different solutions to problems. The game could rely on big, open battlefields where vehicles and heavy weaponry are abundant, as well as fortifications and vantage points to either be taken or exploited.

Or just give the franchise to someone who's better at making games.

I also remember them making a joke involving something like "oh no the flood's spreading we're doomed" and then they revealed some of the Miranda deal before joking about the profits telling her to just "send her tin can down there". Like they may not have lied but there's no way they've given all the details on where they were gonna take that story originally.

It's too late to save Halo.

The series should have ended with Halo 3, time-line wise. They can keep making Halo games, but they should have made them take place during the war.

There's the ODST armor, the Reach armor pack, as well as a Reach Marine/ODST set. The weapons are a separate pack, but someone set up the whole ODST soundtrack so you can listen to that. It's how I usually play these days. I didn't realize how much I wanted a proper turn-based squad ODST game until I got those.
