Just about to boot this up. Any tips for beginners or pitfalls to avoid?

Also Gothic thread.

You've been meme'd by /v/. Have fun not having fun

How so?
>>
>>383415367
That's Gothic 2 you mongrel, not Gothic 1. Why did you lie to us?
>>
>>383416572
I meant the series in general. Sorry.

You've already fallen into the biggest pitfall of Gothic and that's believing that Gothic is a good game.
>>
>>383415367
Have the guy teach you the 1 handed weapons ability
It's important

Just do the quests and have the two guides take you from the old camp to the other 2 so you don't have to fight your way there on your lonesome
>>
>>383416765
Thanks. Any patches etc I should install before playing? I checked PCGamingwiki and they're recommending this:

http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1340357-Release-Gothic-%C2%BD-%C2%97-SystemPack-%28ENG-DEU%29

But I'm not sure if it's wise for a first playthrough.
>>
>>383415367
Arx Fatalis is a much better old rpg. If you get it just make sure you download Arx Libertalis to actually fix the game.
>>
>>383416909
I've also got that on my to-play list, along with some of the Ultima games. I just want to give Gothic 2 a try, first.
>>
>>383416897

It's a good idea to apply the general fan fixes for Gothic. If you really want the vanilla experience, that's fine too, but you'll probably encounter a number of oddities and possibly compatibility issues.
>>
>>383417786
Alright, cheers. That German installer was less intimidating than it seemed.

>>383416721
What's wrong with Gothic? Why is it so divisive here?
>>
>>383417860

Gothic does a couple things well compared to other 3D crpgs (specifically the faction interactions and branching storyline choice), but its general control scheme is either a hit or a miss.

The devs for the Gothic series have stuck to the same fighting mechanics for years, so they're either completely incompetent at designing controls or are stubbornly committed to a flawed design.

>Why is it so divisive here?
Other butthurt RPG fanboys especially morrowind fanboys can't stand that another open world RPG that came out in 2002 is better than Morrowind so they try their hardest to shut it down and shitpost as much as they can
>>
>>383415367

For 1:

>hold LMB and press W to pick up items, talk to NPCs, equip stuff etc.
>hold LMB and WSAD to attack/block
>stick to the main roads at the beginning
>your character is supposed to swing his weapon like a retard at the beginning because you aren't skilled. As you train your weapon skills your attacks are faster, more fluid, and have entirely different animations.
>always lure out single enemies when you see them in groups.

For 2 NoTR:

>never sell dragonroots. king's sorrels and dragon berries, those plants are rare and used for making potions that add permanent STR or DEX bonuses
>start NoTR either before going to the valley of mines for the first time or after coming back. Don't try to put aside the expansion till the very end.
>don't sell any silver chalices or silver plates, after you decide to spare Halvor he will buy them from you for much more gold than other merchants.
>>
>>383419401
>dragon berries
goblin berries*

>>383419401
Thanks guys. The guide to how combat works really helped - it's gonna take me a while to get used to these controls but I recon I can persevere and see it through. I get the impression that the combat in the game is very lethal and requires you to be smart and cautious unless you really know what you're doing or reach higher levels.

>>383418978
I enjoyed Morrowind as well. Don't see why people can't think both are good.
>>
>>383415367
DONT BUY ARMOR, GET GOOD WEAPONS FAST, DO EVERY QUEST FIRST (DONT JOIN ANYONE JUST DO EVERY QUEST FOR THEM THEN JOIN) have fun
>>
>>383419823
>thinking both games are good rather than shitposting furiously for whatever you liked more
Where do you think you are?
>>
>>383415367
if you're playing 2 then remember to min max either STR or DEX, don't try to split between both.

Try to get your sword skill to a new rank as soon as you can. In Gothic 1 it only requires 10 LP from the guy by the arena but in Gothic 2 you'll have to spend more LP on it so don't waste LP on useless shit.
>>
>>383419924
Alright, thanks.

>>383420253
So pick one and stick to it, basically? Got it. I'm not sure what LP is either but I'm sure I'll find out.
>>
>>383420253
I'd also add that if you're playing NotR (which you should be), you'll get tablets that boost your skills. You shouldn't use them until the LP cost to advance your stats is at least 3:1, since at that point you're getting really slow returns.
>>
>>383415367
Be prepared to die so many fucking times, Gothic 2 with NOTR is retardedly hard
>>
>>383420371
LP = learning points, you get 10 LP every level up and you spend them to learn new stuff or upgrade your stats.

In Gothic 1 it's easy to spend them all and still have left over, in Gothic 2 NoTR they're really precious

Learn how to skin animals, train your sword fighting skills, learn picking locks and alchemy, those are the most important skills. And as a newfag you should go for STR
>>
>>383420589
What does NOTR do that makes it harder?
>>
>>383415516
you are experienceing contrarianism.
Sure the incessant shitpostong "best RPG EVAR MAED!!1" is retarded, but the game is great regardless.

Certainly not an especially great RPG, but a superb open world game where discovering things actually means shit.
>>
>>383420371
Also if youre playing Gothic 1 as a melee character prepare to get buttblasted by some hitboxes
>>
>>383420842
Iirc, NotR dramatically boosts the power of enemies while adding diminishing returns on putting learning points into your skills, with the tradeoff of adding a bunch more area/bonuses/items to counterbalance it. You have to specialize a little more than you could before.

The game is a lot better with it imo. Just make sure you save a ton.
>>
>>383420842
It makes skills cost more LP as you learn. So at first training STR will cost 5 LP for 5 STR, and then 10 LP for 5 STR, and then 15 LP for 5 STR. That's why you have to make potions that add permanent STR late game because you just can't train STR anymore.

It also adds some new tough enemies around the map

and the expansion itself is pretty hard for a newfag too
>>
>>383421023
Will do. I save games a lot already, and I'll take care when building my character.
>>
Savescumming: The Game
>>
>>383421168
I'd suggest 30 dex for thieving and pickpocketing, then pumping whatever you choose to do (str, dex, or mana). You don't have to go pure minmax, though, doing a mage with 60 dex for thieving/dex weapons is workable, etc. For your first run, a str melee character is probably easiest.

The reason you do have to focus, however, is that damage is a flat reduction. It's very possible to not have pumped your str enough with str weapons and run into an enemy that resists 100 physical damage while you deal 100 damage and be literally unable to damage it.
>>
>>383415367
There is no pitfalls, because it is the best RPG eva.

:^)
>>
>>383415367
The pitfall to avoid is playing gothic.
>>
>>383421537
Alright, cheers. I've managed to get a controller working for the combat stuff, since it doesn't read my mouse turning very well, and I'm just using the keyboard for menus and stuff.

Fingers crossed.
>>
>>383423172
>controller
just dont bother
>>
>>383423172
Huh, good luck. I've only ever used pure keyboard for it, but whatever works!
>>
>>383423714
Using pure keyboard just feels strange. And it works pretty well so far, actually, though I'm running into issues with the Statue of Beilar where the text box doesn't appear. I think that might be due to the DX11 mod or a widescreen thing, however.
>>
>>383423269
Why not?

Why am I getting my ass kicked by a wolf?
>>
>>383425994
Its because you have garbage weapon
>>
>>383425994
>>383426120
It's because you don't fight him the right way.

When it lunges at you backstep (if youre playing 2 because backstep in 1 doesnt fucking work) and then hit him and repeat. Weapon doesn't matter
>>
>>383423714
pure keyboard is the only way I can play Gothic 1 and 2

I feel I can control the hero better, the mouse feels not right
>>
Gothic 1 is only good for the first half or so. Once you've cleared the map and explored everything, it's just a long ass dungeon crawling killing repetitive mobs.
>>
>>383425994
because wolves aren't tier 1 shitty enemies like in most RPGs
>>
>>383427039
Gothic 1 or 2 never felt repetitive to me, that's what I liked about it, the dungeons are always puzzling and creepy
>>
I hope you applied the 60fps patch for G1.
>>
>>383425994
At the start of Gothic, you're a literal shit who can't even wield a weapon properly. Your characters form will improve as they raise their skill.

Meanwhile wolves are toothy motherfuckers who don't afraid of anything

>>
>>383428035
But I liked and replay both and I'm pretty sure CDPR said they took some inspiration from Gothic
>>
>>383428035
Anon, I'm not sure what you're trying to prove. I absolutely loved The Witcher 3, and so far I'm also enjoying Gothic 2.
>>
Is it possible to get away with not playing the first game, or am I missing out?
>>
>>383428365
2 continues straight from the end of 1 and brings back a number of characters. It also revisits almost the entire map of 1 under different circumstances.

1 isn't strictly necessary, but I would strongly suggest playing both simply for continuity. 2 is the better game in total but 1 is still great by itself.
>>
>>383428262
>>383428208
the nostalgiababby who shits up every TW3 thread and makes TW3 hate threads is most definitely in this thread.
>>
>>383428627
Oh, well, fuck that guy.
>>
>>383428543
Hmm, alright. Since I don't actually own 1 I'll play 2 first and see about getting into it, then pick up 1 to see what it did.

I usually dislike playing games out of order but I was led to believe the first one was bad or that it had aged terribly or something like that, so there was a reason I only bought the second one in a GOG sale ages back.
>>
>>383428627
TW3 is garbage
>>
When did you first get into Gothic anons ?

G2 summer of 2004 for me
>>
>>383428365
You revisit a changed version of the map from the first game so you'd be missing out on that feeling of familiarity. You also run into a couple of your old pals and acquaintences, but they reintroduce themselves.
Overall I'd say you can skip it if you want to, but you do miss a little bit of the magic of playing this game as a sequel instead of as a standalone story.
>>
>>383415367
Its the Dark Souls of rpg´s
>>
>>383428627
you sure that wasn't just console war shitposting ?

only neo/v/ hate W3 anyway
>>
>>383428701
The mechanics are pretty similar, though Gothic 1's are a little simpler and less developed. The gameplay and feel of the games are pretty close. 2 just has a lot more content.
>>
>>383428979
I don't hate Witcher 3, but I do find it lackluster. It stretches itself too thin and tries to compensate for that by literally handing everything to you.
I prefer Witcher 1, honestly, despite the slow start and the weird combat. The story and quests just flow so much better.
>>
>>383429224
TW3 suffers from the same things most open world games do, but some of the quest lines themselves are superb. There's just a fair bit of downtime in between.

TW1 chapter 4 is still GOAT
>>
>>383428867
demon's souls = Gothic 1 of souls game
dark souls = Gothic 2
dark souls 2 = Arcania

bloodborne = Risen
dark souls 3 = Gothic 3
>>
Gothic>>Baldurs Gate 2>Ultima VII

Daily reminder that those are the only godtier rpgs that exist.
>>
>>383429392
shit comparison, among other things, implies gothic 3 is playable and that risen is an improvement over 2
>>
>>383429542
then i guess it isn't the Dark Souls of rpg´s then
>>
Game crashes during saving and corrupted files will probably happen a lot. Make sure you have a lot of save backups

K man sorry gonna take ultima/bg2 off the list sheesh.
>>
>>383429707
Thanks for the tip. I usually leapfrog with 3-5 saves anyway, but I'll be extra careful. So far I'm finding it crashes whenever I quit.

Stop making this thread.
I have played those games to death and don't want to restart just to stop in the middle of the game.
