If you want crpg start with Baldurs Gate 1, then 2, Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum, Planescape, Divinity Original Sin, Pillars (with expansions), Underrail and Icewind Dales.
Neverwinter are kinda bland in single player mode but you can try and see it for yourself.

If you want other genres add Diablo 2, Thief 1 and 2, Grim Fandango, Deus Ex, STALKER (all of them), Commandos 1 and 2, Gemini Rue, Limbo, Warcraft 3 + expansion.

Don't forget The Age of Decadence

Before you dive head first into this remember these are OLD games

Give em a try before you take them with you specially considering that you haven't played them.

Also Thief 1 and 2 are HIGHLY recommended, i've wasted countless hours just exploring and collecting all the loot

Get the EEs, they are easier to the original and the tutorial wll be useful since you are new to the genre.

Be patient since it will hard at the beginning but rewarding in the end. Don't be ashame about using cheese tactics .And if you play BG1 first then BG2 will be a blast since you will be familiar with the system.

Pillars is a little more complicated than most of the other titles which tend to follow classic AD&D or 3.X D&D formula. More than any other title, you're better off building balanced because of how heavily they punish min/maxed characters. Instead of maxing out Might, Perception and Constitution for your Barbarian and lowering everything else down to 3's, you should try and keep of your secondary stats at around 10 and using the remaining points to bring up your primary stats.

If you had trouble with Pillars I wouldn't recommend you Baldur's Gate unless you're familiar with AD&D rules.

My suggestion would be Fallout 1. It's what brought me to cRPGs when I was 10 years old. The rules aren't that complicated to learn, the game isn't that hard and it still offers a great crpg experience.

Well, the enhanced editions let you use BGII character options in BG, which is nice. Other than that, it's mostly just a few new party members with some sidequests.

Haven't played Siege of Dragonspear, but it was apparently super buggy on release, and I don't know how much of that was fixed.

Nah, they kept retooling the game to where no stat is unimportant to any given character. Take Intelligence on a Barbarian, for example. There mainstay ability is Carnage, where all their attacks are AoEs. The higher the Barbarian's intelligence, the more monsters you affect. A reasonably intelligent Barbarian is cutting down monsters he's nowhere near. Similarly skimping on intelligence not only lowers that range, but your signature Frenzy ability? It lowers its duration.

So again, at best you want balanced stats with nothing lower than a 10 so you don't penalize what your base abilities are. And really, this system results in you being able to make some pretty interesting builds since any stat can mean a profound effect on your character.

Not only are the original versions absolutely full of bugs, but they're just old as fuck and you will run into lots of issues with them. Don't even get me started on the issues of lack of technology back in those days, because playing BG1 and 2 can be a lesson in absolute frustration because back then certain technology either didn't exist or just wasn't used in games.

The only two you'll ever need are the Widescreen mod and BGTutu. That does 99% of what the Enhanced Edition does with none of the constant stream of game breaking bugs or the forced inserted SJW characters. In the basegame they were still very limited. They could only add new dialogue and concentrated on their new, original characters. Those characters are horrible and have horrible writing making them stick out of the gameworld.

That does influence the overall quality of the game. You could have the most amazing soup in the world, but if someone adds a big amount of salt, the soup will taste worse as a whole.

In the new areas Beamdogs writing goes all out with poor quality. Oh and SoD is an abomination.

There is also a super indie game called The Fall of the Dungeon Warriors. It's like Legend of Grimrock, but with MMO-like combat which works pretty well and I had a lot of fun with it. The weakest part of the game was the story/dialogue because I'm pretty sure the dev of the game's first language isn't english. He made a lot of changes though based on feedback so it might be better now.

MOD THE SHIT OUT OF BALDUR'S GATE TRILOGY, SPECIALLY THE COMBAT (both enemy and ally AI, encounter design, loot redesign, rebalances and fixes for all spells and abilities etc.)
The vanilla combat is ATROCIUS but modded is one of the best real time+ pause there are, and in general there are several mods that fix a lot of shit from the games, don't miss it, anon.

That NPC has a completely made up fantasy name, like any other character. Yet this one guy you can ask what's up with the strange (normal) name.

Then you hear some stuff about a transsexual in a world of magic, literal miracles, with girdles of gender change sold as joke items who had the same problems real life trannys had. It makes no sense AND is voiced by a real tranny (non-passing, of course)

correct me if im wrong, but i felt as if every conversation HAD to have you come along and get the last word in, i don't remember my party bantering among themselves at all.
also no one ever had a normal conversation, everything was some philosophical quandary or exposition. people dont talk like this in real life, also 0 bantz, and no, two characters talking about random bullshit and agreeing with eachother on everything isn't banter.
All of this is just idle chit chat as you're traveling along, there's very little if any actual conversation or interaction between party members, nothing even close to the level of conversations you had Keldorn and Minsc or Anomen or your talks with Viconia. And definitely nothing as funny as Edwin or Korgan. Apparently a lot of this was Sawyer's fault because he hates party interaction because it takes the player out of the game or something.
But the bottom line is that the characters (and world) in the base game PoE are simply bland.

I'm fighting the battle between powergaming and flavor. I fundimentally love the dark or grey paladin, but the mechanics for Blackguard seem so shit compared to something like a Berseker.

I always end up getting caught up in the character creation process in just about every RPG I ever play. Very rarely is it cut and dry enough for me to just hop into the game.

Dorn is super rapey and won't take no for an answer which is ironic and somewhat funny, but his quests are still pretty decent plus he's strong and that's the important thing.
Neera is annoying but her chaos shit makes fights interesting, her 1st game quest is boring but her 2nd game quest is pretty cool.
Rasaad is weak as hell in 1, but his quest is awesome. In 2 he's almost overpowered and his quests are rad, plus it opens up the secret character.
