It can be ok, but my problem with all turn based JRPGs is that the turn based battles take up 95% of play time, and its by far the most boring part of the game. When you think what is good about JRPGs, people usually say stuff like the sohpisticed plots, the characters, the awesome music/production, going around the environments...The battle system is usually the most boring part, so why the fuck does it take up so much time? It sucks balls when you're exploring a dungeon or a cave, and the exploration is constantly interrupted by battles (it doesn't matter if it's "random" or not, the very existence of a lot of battles is the problem). Too often it feels like the turn based battles just get in the way of what's actually enjoyable.

In Pokemon, seems like virtually everyone uses the Repeal item to decrease the battles...Isn't that a sign that the gameplay is fucking boring, if you need an item to decrease it?

I think its a dying genre at this point, a popular game like Undertale had to use a minigame system for the turn based battles to make it seem fun.

1. Cut down on anything that could be considered grinding. The fact that most games have items that actively cut down the amount of random battles you encounter means that the battles are boring and people want less of them. It's like putting a bandaid on a festering wound. You're not fixing the problem.

2. No more story heavy games. Any RPG that relies on its plot is instantly trash and should be discarded as such. Videogames are for gameplay, nothing more.

3. Make the turn based gameplay more tactical, having more environmental options like Chrono Trigger, or have my input mean more, like Undertale tried to do. Timed hits like Super Mario RPG, pre-emptive hits like in Earthbound and Paper Mario, the whole shebang. There's so much to take inspiration from, stop ripping off Final Fantasy.

Probably my favorite form of game. Advance wars is Bae.

The RPG's could sometimes be improved by having a mechanic that rushes your decisions and turns. Maybe only have 3 seconds to decide your move and complete it. That would introduce tension and errors made because you'd have less time to think it out
