I think making your characters deliberately ugly does a lot more damage to a game than people think.

I have the opposite problem when it comes to eastern MMOs. Since every player wants to have an attractive protagonist and there are certain universal standards of beauty when it comes to facial features, all the players start to look like the same few faces after seeing thousands of them.

Seeing a deliberately ugly character here and there helps the beauty stand out. I understand that's in service of beauty standards, not a deconstruction of it, but I'm pretty sick and tired of what a bunch of gooks think beauty is and refusing to have it contrast with anything. It gets old really quickly.
