It was a combination of a lot of things, I think. It came out in December and most publications had already done or were in the middle of doing their GOTY content at that point, so it got kind of overlooked and didn't make it on many end of year lists. It unfortunately got some attention for its poor framerate, but most reviews basically just said "it's an Ueda game, if you've liked those before you'll probably like this, 7/10". It wasn't bad by any stretch but it also wasn't the amazing experience that the decade it took to get released would make you think it would be.

PS2 era GTA has aged like milk gameplay wise. The lock on for aiming was atrocious, the camera regularly gets caught behind buildings and other objects, gunplay in general was one of the worst things about them, etc.

The atmosphere is still amazing though. The modern versions are more technically sound, but they feel so corporate now with the constant shilling of GTAO and it's shark card economy. But that's business I guess.

The idea behind it was kind of cool, but there was no marketing behind it at all, as if Sony were ashamed of it from the get go.

It's a shame, because they could have marketed it more like a PS1 mini that could also play PSP and Vita games. Throw in 2 or 3 free classic games, and you have a hit with the lucrative nostalgia market.

It was still a garbage setup. That HP had issues playing games that ran fine on my older Pavilion I got in August 2001. Shame that system failed. Shared it with sisters who would consistently download BackstreetBoys-AsLongAsYouLoveMe(1).mp3.exe then turn around and blame it on my games. I miss that computer and its TNT2. My first foray into serious PC gaming.
