I hear that it's a must to own a fightstick if you want to get better. Playing the demo, I can tell that I would greatly benefit from it. But because a quality stick goes for about $200, and I can't afford it, I'm not getting it.

Nobody in their right mind would tell you that. I decided to buy one because I thought it would be fun and playing on controller felt uncomfortable, so I decided on trying out a stick. I found it much more comfortable, but it won't make you better. Also, sticks in the 100-150 range might be your best bet, like a HRAP 4 (I haven't looked into the stick business in a while so I don't know what's new).
