Well if you have played 8 you're aware of Triple Triad. Tetra Masters takes the concept of Triple Triad and ruins it by adding complete nonsense to it that doesn't make the game better.
For one thing, cards have different values. So even if you get the same monster card twice, they'll be different. Makes building a deck fucking dreadful. Then cards have arrows that determines the direction of their attack, which just makes the game tedious to play because more often than not you'll find yourself in positions where you can't do shit, especially when you just start out.
Cards also have levels iirc, which is completely retarded.

Thankfully, it isn't mandatory to win the tournament that's associated with it.

A lighthearted fantasy tale with a mature twist. Some loveable characters as well as some forgettable ones. Probably the peak of graphics for the PS1. Good music, fun battle system (albeit slow), some generally unforgettable moments and locations. A few fun mini games. And a final boss that literally comes out of nowhere, seriously what was with that guy

The best part about IX is the cast,it's without a doubt the best cast in the series.All of the characters are fleshed out even Amarant and all serve a purpose to the overall plot and have their moments in the spotlight

The combat is slow and if you're not a classicfag,it's going to be tough to get used to.However,the soundtrack was still composed by Uematsu and Melodies of Life will stick with you forever.

The main villain Kuja, is written well enough for you to give a fuck about him,all the way through the very end and his relation to Zidane is pretty different and refreshing for the FF series.

Tetra Master is shit though,the worst minigame in the series by far and that's the biggest flaw in FFIX,which is a very good thing.

shame because the boring fighting is what caused me never to finish this game. and i love a lot of the FFs.

ability learning system and making setups is fun, as usual for FF. can be a bit micro-intensive if you like to setup proper killer traits etc for every area, but thats what i enjoy about these kinda games. it is slow but i don't mind that so much, honestly the slow loading screens and getting obsessed with trying to steal are the worst of it. every boss has a rare item or two worth stealing but it can be 1/50 or something shitty.

Random is a useless rule that can easily circumvented by transmuting all your trash cards, which you should do anyway.
Element isn't a detrimental rule either.

I played parts of it ages ago on the ds. never finished it back then during that trip so when it was on sale earlier this year I got it. I heard the psp version is much easier.

Not him, but I don't think so, I know the game pretty well, so with every play through I tend to do most of the side quests, so by the time I get back to the story, I have gained a few extra levels and the game becomes relatively easy, not to mention some of the side quests, especially the Chocobo one gets you some very good gear early on if you know what you're doing and/or put enough time into it.

As this is your first play through, and I assume you don't know about the side quests, so there will be a lot that you will miss on a first playthrough unless you use a guide, but that shouldn't matter too much, because even without the side quests I don't think the main storyline is too hard.

As for that level jump the other guy was talking about I have no idea what he is referring to. Might be Ozma, the optional super boss, but I wouldn't worry about that as in order to even access him you need to complete the lengthy Chocobo side quest, which spans across the whole game. Completing the friendly monsters sidequest helps, it makes the Ozma fight easier, as completing it makes Ozma susceptible to physical attacks. But as I say, that's all optional

Best PS1 FF and one of the best FF in general.

Fantastic cast and setting. Great OST. Good story. Combat is relatively slow but if you play on pc you can speed it up, but I also kinda didn't mind how slow it was cause the battle theme is godly. As far as gameplay goes I think it's much better balanced than 7 and 8.

In my top 3 FF games for sure.

Grinding. It's a bit difficult since it was made before games starting going baby mode
