Basically the change of direction for the franchise from Awakening along with the huge influx of new fans into the franchise caused the fans to basically split into two camps. There's the Pre-Radiant Dawn side that believes that the older Fire Emblem games were wonderful and that the new ones are full of casualization, waifufaging and would have rather seen the series die than turn into what it is today. Then there's the 3DS/Mobile fanbase that, due to no knowledge of the series prior, love what they're currently playing, waifu's, marriage, phoenix mode and all, but see the older fans as a bunch of old bitter NO FUN shitters that refuse to acknowledge that a series can change and that they should be grateful for Awakening pulling the franchise out of the grave and into the spotlight. Meleefags will literally go to events where another game is being played just to bitch about that game. Not even one or two of them either. How they handled the grind is another issue I had with the game. If you promote immediately you'll lose out dozen of stats, however if you don't you'll end up with massively underlevelled units because of the exp scaling. The solution is obviously to just grind the fuck out of your characters, but then you'll be overpowered. The lack of a proper reclass system doesn't help either.

It went through a flux.
First it was old consolefags vs the GBA players, but the fanbase wasn't as big back then so no one remembers or noticed.
After FEA released, there was a few years where it was "oldfags vs Awakeningbabbies" where it was split between the smaller old base and new one, who hated each other.
Fates didn't change much of that.
Heroes introduced mobilefags but there was surprisingly little overlap and they usually stay fairly separate to this day.
However once Echoes was released, the old war of FEA died out and was replaced with the 3DS fanbases for each game killing each other, and it is as bad as the FEA vs pre RD fanbase. You aren't allowed to like Fates if you like Echoes more, you aren't allowed to like Echoes if you liked Fates more, and you aren't allowed to like Awakening at all.

We have reached what I like to call a "cancer zenith," a point where civil discussion is a rare commodity and the mention of any title is not to be met with talk of the game but rather shitflinging as the default expectation.
