They're making small advances in HDDs so SSDs are more of a focus and their prices are coming down.

What you get from a console at the moment isn't terrific in terms of framerates, load times or resolution (even on a PS4 Pro) compared to a PC but it's cheaper, sure.

Also y PC was the best... in 2008, I got most parts second hand in 2014. So there's definitely merrit to getting a great PC if you're looking at memory intensive shooters and don't want a diminished experience.

Being able to afford a high end PC ruined vidya for me. For the longest time I would play shitty games on the lowest settings, sometimes lower than intended with edits, and I enjoyed it. I was grateful for what I had and enjoyed every minute of it. I always had a goal of saving up for a good PC and thought about all the games I would be able to play and how pretty they would look. Now that I can do that, I've lost interest in vidya. Either games are now shittier or I'm just getting old. The weird part is, I still enjoy thinking about upgrading. I was considering of upgrading so that I can play games at 144hz 1440p or something but what's the point if the games are shit? I have more fun building PC set ups on Amazon and doing research than I do playing vidya.

i upgraded my rig right before or as GTAV launched for the PC. around then Shadows of Mordor came out, Tomb Raider and balls deep in Skyrim modding. Watch Dogs just came out, Arkham Knight came out not too long after. Witcher 3 was right around the corner. (never bought that though)

in other words, it was relevant and prudent to upgrade, especially your RAM. 8gb of RAM just recently became unsuitable.

but now, it's like there's a plateau period. all the major companies are probably working on their major titles as we speak.

Almost everything from 2010 onwards is foreign territory for me, and if I build a decent enough rig I'll be set for the next 3-5 years.
