I should be allowed to post any video game thread on ./v/ without being afraid of being banned

It was more of the same, except there were a lot of general threads floating around before /vg/ existed.

I wonder where our fellow autistic faggots are that have since stopped coming back to /v/. I wonder how many have died, or who have made something of their lives?

Well everyone wasn't on a phone, so more OC could be made, and without the fear of reddit people didn't worry about posting whatever they wanted.

Everyone blames reddit, and yes, it has some blame, but really the paranoia was way worse. Mobile posting led to worse things, but since so many people came during its prevalence, they don't know. Remember when being b& meant not even being able to browse the site? Shit was scary. Now just easily evade and continue to shit up the site with constant auto correct errors and lack of tools to make content.

As for console wars, shit was the shame, just not as constant at first. It got worse with every year. I blame people trying to turn 4chan into a movement creator, a statement. It either made the users more reactionary and fearful or brought it people who had and never would lurk, so they just reacted without an understanding of the sites nature.
>>
They still liked anime at least.

oh no, your console bait threads get pushed of the board in an instant what a loss, the generals here were actually decent, because new people kept dropping in, the generals on /vg/ either quickly died, if the game wasn't that popular or they concentrated the purest and worst of the tripfag cancer making them unbrowsable. So no we have 2 boards about shitposting, one about pokemon porn and one very slow board about old video games, another genius move by moot.

/vg/ is a containment board for the absolute worst degeneracy of /v/. same with /vp/. /v/ was once a containment board as well, so now you have containments of containments. It's quite sad really.

Fuck off. /vg/ serves no purpose other than to create "NEW" vidya discussion which revolves around SJWs, twitter, and neogaf. It's cancer.

I would gladly welcome back monster hunter general and pokemon threads if it means we returned back to regular vidya discussion.
>>
>>383363176
oh wait, I also remember that there were a gorillion tripfags back then
>>
>>383363074
Because, as proven throughout the history of 4chan, containment boards do not work without effective moderation. That effective moderation is at an all time low. I don't even think the jannies assigned to /v/ play video games. They also let off topic blatant shitposting get to 200+ threads before taking any action. Hell, many even make it to post limit and autosage before they 404 it. Truly pathetic.
>>
>>383362147
fuck off retard, /v/ had 24/7 threads of korean drama (sc2), LoL and every other fucking new game that had a following, it was so bad that people started shitposting the generals and mods had to delete them, so /vg/ was created to contain all those faggots
>>
>>383363362
yeah and now we have 24/7 SJW, twitter screen cap, HAHAHHAHAHA, and reddit threads.

SO MUCH BETTER
>>
>>383363362

I'm so glad that 3/4s of the board isn't the same threads about the same videogames and pokemon anymore.

I mean I wish the hole wasn't plugged with shitposting, proxy arguments and e-celeb drama, but still.
>>
>>383363843
>Way more shitposting
what the fuck are you talking about??
The shitposting in here right now is unbearable compared to 2006/2007, now you can't say ''a'' because retards start trowing shit at you every chance they get, becuase they think that's the board's culture.
I hate what this fucking place has become, and not just /v/, 4chan as a whole.
>>

/v/ was better before /vg/.
/v/ needs people who actually enjoy games and play them enough to defend them so threads don't turn into 'this game is shit/nuh uh' for 300+ posts.
/vg/ needs /v/ to stop generals being massive circlejerks which dissolve into TS/Discord drama

I swear the console war faggots have increased massively in recent years. PC golden age kept the console warriors in check.

>>383364362
In all seriousness if you think /vg/ is full of people who actually play and enjoy games you need to go there and read some of the faster/more popular threads.

/vg/ is a containment board, this board is filled with underage faggots but the people in /vg/ are subhuman.
>>
>>383364221
Ironic shitposting is the worst kind of shitposting, i would take people saging threads to death because they don't like it over threads filled with cuck and traps posting any day.
And people still shitpost ironically because they think its okay because its ironic.
>>383364257
i don't know how being a janitor works, maybe they still try to do their job, but its just too fucking much shitposting for someone to handle.
I mean if i was a janitor i would be literally hitler, people would hate me, but at the same time i would cleanse the board of any form of shitpost, bait post should be deleted on sight, instead of letting other retards reply to it until the thread gets 500posts of people arguing about stupid shit.

I would start with nuking bait/blatant shitpost threads on sight and actually look for report logs for a change. I would actually dedicate like 2 or 3 hours of my time to work in this board's rush hour.

This is too fucking much. The state of this board is unacceptable right now.
>>
>>383364704
True, but we keep the underage and reddit out of here.
>>
Friendly reminder you are required to lurk for 2 years before posting on 4chan.
>>
>>383362004
In terms of shit posting and console war bullshit, basically the same.

The key difference is that old /v/ was a festering den of Nintenbros and old fags because /vp/ and retro containment didn't exist.

The tradeoff is that you now have entry level /pol/tards instead.

you have to be an idiot to think we don't need that.
If you think people shouldn't be banned for shitposting every day just because ''muh freedom of speech'' you're part of the problem.
I agree 4chan shouldn't be strictly moderated, but we have come to the point that we NEED it for the site to be good again.
>>383364802
Yup, that's what i would do too.

>>
>>383364480
Its why I believe both boards need each other. /v/ keeps /vg/ in check, /vg/ keeps /v/ in check.

The blunder culture on /v/ could really use some /vg/ goers to stop them spouting bullshit.

CSGO threads on /v/ for example are just people wishing it was dead and making uninformed arguments against it which anyone from /vg/ could debunk.

Meanwhile generals on /vg/ untouched by new visitors windup turning into non vidya meet friends groups which just want drama need /v/ to keep things on topic.

/vr/ here.

Before we had our own board, discussion of anything pre-PS1 was nearly impossible. NO ONE would respond and you'd have to bump your own thread all the time. /vr/ allows for shit like Doom General, RollerCoaster Tycoon General, old school dev stories, pinball discussion, pre-90s PC game discussion, arcade discussion, serious/in-depth discussion of Japanese exclusive games, etc., all of which was difficult to impossible to discuss before /vr/ existed.

And yes, there is an actual demand for and interest in that kind of stuff.

My earliest memories of browsing 4chan was during the Wii reveal in 2005. Phrases and typing behavior that we now consider to be cancerous were more accepted by the posters because they hadn't been ruined by normalfags and cringy faggots who used them outside the internet. People were unironically typing things like "epic win" when they saw some tame meme being a GET.

People were already back then talking about the days when "4chan was good".

Yhatzee's GLORIOUS PC GAMING MASTER RACE thing really brought them out of their holes though.
>>
>>383362004
There were a lot more spambots.

Only about 60% of threads were video game related.

More OC and rare images.

/v/irgins were more open-minded. Not in the not-racist sense, they were still racist, but they talked about a much wider variety of games and didn't break into a sweat whenever an opinion outside the corporate approved mainstream popped up. /v/ isn't quite pic related yet, but it's made big jumps in that direction over the years.

A lot more anime shitposting and obnoxious tripcode users.

User turnover rate wasn't as high, so there was a longer collective memory.

The memes and attempts at being "funny" were still shit.

/v/ prior to ~2011 had way worse lows than it does now, but also somewhat more intelligent actual discussion. But there's also been a huge shift in internet culture as a whole, such things were never going to last.

Anyone who complains about /pol/ doesn't realize it but, this shit happened with /b/ years ago

It's always been like this.

i think people who whine about muh /pol/ all the time are far more annoying than /pol/.
Some of them go around saying muh /pol/ all the time. There's a little joke there and a person comes and starts yelling /pol/ like a fucking retard.

It's like some people strive on conflict.

What killed all discussion on 4chan was strawmen.

If someone says something you don't like, you can call them reddit, /pol/, tumblr, SJW, antiSJW, /r9k/, neogaf, ameriburger, eurofag, facebook, mobileposter, nu-/v/, neo-/v/, /lgbt/, /vg/, gaia, neopets, /mlp/ etc etc etc

And instantly all discussion is dropped, because then the debate is "I'm not [strawman] - you are"
>boy what a [strawman] thing to say
>only [strawman] likes thing you like
>only [strawman] don't like thing
>you sound awfully [strawman] when you say that
>I can tell from how you use full stops and question marks that you are from [strawplace]
>how would you know that if you didn't go to [strawplace]
>hello [strawman]!

And the SJW/antiSJW shitflinging is even worse. Threads here constantly reach their limit without anyone having said anything, just throwing these worthless strawmen at each other. And it's only gotten worse every year for the past 5 years. It will never stop.

Like right now people on twitter are already catching up on Todd Howard jokes. We became cynical because videogames are too popular and too mainstream, we have become a source of shill and for developers to exploit us, a site people who come to "ironically"shitpost com and make a mess instead of staying on topic, it is no longer this place we used to hang out and discuss.

There was also a battle over mfw and my face when.

most people think rule 1 and 2 were just a reference to fight club but even fight club shown the consequences of breaking 2 simple rules, it wasn't a reference but it was a rational rule, keep the place intact and you'll keep everyone who will change it to their needs outside of it. Look at the threads we have now, is furfags circlejerking around, waifuposting, shitpost threads and such. Nobody here wants to talk about videogames anymore, they just want to see what's the new meme sensation from /v/ so they can go to fb and share it with their friends
>>
>>383366190
Funny because even in the supposedly worst /vg/ threads, the discussion is always about the latest updates, what is good/shit in the meta, what cosmetic is the best etc.

But because /v/ has such a short attention span and sees the first ten posts are "x for y" which is usually the flavor of the month waifu, they assume the entire thread is like that.

Shitposting was about the same. About the same amount of meme spouting (maybe a little more). Mods were far less effective at their jobs. >>
>>383373971
That depends entirely on the general.

Some of those are dark places. Final Fantasy XIV is the perfect example. You can make an XIV thread on/v/ and it discuss the game, the jobs, the bosses, the endgame, the story, future updates, everything.

You go and browse /xivg/ on /vg/ and you will witness the worst of humanity. Role playing with their in game characters that has descended to such depravity it has people carving death threats into their own arms with knives and people printing out images of other peoples characters, taking a shit on it, then posting that for all to see. They do not discuss the game at all.

/vg/ is too contained for its own good.

It's because we've all got a different time of death for the site.

Some thing it died with Chanology. Some think it died when/pol/ was brought back. Some people think it died when /v/ had to be split (now we have 4 fucking boards.) Some think it died when /co/ imploded and unleashed the wave of Brony autism that infected the site as a whole.

I personally think it was all of these things. /v/ as a whole is dead because we're fractured into a million boards. The great flood of 08 brought us kicking and screaming into the spotlight. /co/ and /pol/ both represent incompatible ends of the spectrum that are always going to have to argue and fight with each other whenever possible regardless of board.

/co/ ended up becoming /co/mblr and giving way to /lgbt/ and /pony/, meanwhile /pol/ was brought back to become stormfront 2.0. The site as a whole has ended up trying to cater towards everyone and all it's doing is causing a shit ton of fighting.

It is extremely clear from your post that as soon as you see anything liberal or "degenerate" on 4chan you blame "/co/mblr"

I still don't see why retards consider /co/ INFECTED. All that happens is /co/ gets the same retarded bait that you get on /v/, aka THIS NEW GAME/COMIC HAS A STRONG BLACK FEMALE CHARACTER IN IT and /co/ says

That's how it felt with me too. As if the entire board was being dragged in the dirt like a dead animal tied to a truck, and you expect it to maybe let up a little in a few months, but it never comes back to being "normal". The site gets filled with people spamming twitter lingo and posting twitter screencaps, but instead of there being some concentrated reaction, people just don't give a shit and move on. There's no community proper now - I assume at least a third of the people on here are idiot teenagers posting from their phones, and I've got pretty good reason to believe that too. I'm not even upset about the ordeal like I once was. 4chan being an empty shell just seems like a truism now, almost too obvious to be worth discussing.

That's just an evolution of when people would say "shiggydiggy.png" instead of posting a pic.
And then as with everything else, things escalated, and people started using random extensions and stacking them. It was pretty fun.
>>

>4chan being an empty shell just seems like a truism now, almost too obvious to be worth discussing.

It is pretty depressing, though. I used to quite like this site. I guess all good things must come to an end.
>>
>>383376706
It's become way less common these days, I've noticed. Back in 2011, file extension-posting was everywhere.
>>
>>383362105
it's funny how /b/ raided reddit with rage faces and reddit just ended up adopting them as their own kek
>>
>>383376580
Not gonna come down on you for your rant but shit like this is why so many boards are ass nowadays. Yeah sure everyone has an opinion and everyone has in their minds exactly what may or may not of happened back in the day but ...

In the end who gives two flying fucks what really happened. All the people whining about shit is why new boards were made, why people got angry over all the bullshit here and there, it doesn't matter.
>>
>>383375067
God willing, it'll have shut down by then. I mean, it can't get worse forever, right? There has to be a point where people stop coming in to replace those who leave, right? Even moot was smart enough to get the hell out. There's a limit to what people will endure.
>>
>>383377015
Moot just did that thing every failed startup does where they cut their ties to any responsibilities and go soul-search or whatever.
>>
>>383377015
I think people are already starting to get bored of this site. If people posted at the same speed, /v/ would be at it's 400 million post by now.
>>
>>383376580
/co/ was an outright breach in the hull as far as underage bans and buried-in-their-own-Donut-Steels bloggers went. I'm not the guy you were responding to, but I witnessed /co/'s pitiful death between 2010-2014 and occasionally visit the wasteland that still remains. Now, to say it led to the creation of /lgbt/ is a stretch, but boy was it a bad place by 2014.

Much better taste in games. Faggots actually knew what they were talking about back then and weren't just pathetic tryhard memers trying to score brownie points by pretending to be elitist while obviously having no idea what they're talking about. Also discussing bullshit like Halo and COD was fucking impossible on this board. In terms of taste it was definitely a billion times better. Shit happens.

Even in 2009 we joked that people would be making Halo and COD nostalgia threads one day on /v/. We really never thought it would actually happen though. Oh well.

It's not tumblr though. Nor is it a "safe place" for anyone. What are you trying to get at sir? All I was trying to say is the quality of posting has gone downhill but it's really not all that much different from basically the beginning of /v/

I might be drunk but im not talking about anything I haven't experienced in my years here. Also why the fuck should I have to ever explain myself? why you getting all butthurt about internet words sir?
>>

i truly pity kids that found 4chan at very young ages and get addicted to it. it's such a decrepit mindfuck. I started when I was 23 and I'm 31 now and its still taken its toll on me. growing up during your formative/developmental years on 4chan would truly fuck you over for life
>>
The perfect example of how shit /v/ is right now is right here >>383374127

Look at that thread. Old /v/, even if you want to call it "/b/ with videogames" would have made jokes. They might mock the theme or they might say who cares, but they wouldn't be so fucking serious about it. Look through that fucking thread and look at how "serious business" it is. /v/ was never good, but it was definitely a whole lot better than this.

I started coming to 4chan around 2005, got really into it a few years later, grew out of it around 2012, then came back to it recently.

It's like a drug. It's seriously unhealthy and fosters an unhealthy mindset. I can't believe a fucking website has had a measurable negative impact on my mental health. It only gets worse.
