Almost all western puzzles feel like they are either there to make the player feel smarter (ridiculously easy puzzles solved through common sense only), or to exhibit the intelligence of the designer -a.k.a make the designer feel smarter- (ridiculously hard puzzles that cannot be solved through a process of logic but through hints, guides or other supportive knowledge which ultimately undermines the participation of player but highlights the design of the creator).

The whole concept of video games is way too broad to compare critically, but I think at least this is true.
