Remember when RTS was about armies fighting armies, or support units supporting armies... instead of heroes duking it out with armies supporting them or heroes going alone against enemy heroes?
it sure was a nice genre.

most RTS units can be classed as resource gatherer, or infantry, or vehicle (land, water air) or building. "support" is a special class which is usually non-combat, like medic or mechanic or engineer.
"heroes" would logically be a super-unit of their respective class.

super infantry and super vehicle - the experimentals from Supreme Commander, or Tanya from Red Alert, or even just higher tiers of the same unit like in Age of Empires.

super building - any kind of building that provides you with something like a "nuke" or other timer-based ability. it doesn't need to be directly combative either; a "wonder" from age of empires is a super-building because it starts your conditional win timer.

a super-support unit is a rarer kind, but i think all the "spellcasters" from the WarCraft and StarCraft series could count. you start with a simple support unit, and then through upgrades get a super-support unit.

the problem with the idea of "heroes" comes in when you try to combine too many types and subtypes together. you get this disgustingly bloated figure (with HP to match) with too many abilities and superiorities, and not enough faults.
the fact you can pseudo-RPG your heroes with their stats and inventory in WC3 doesn't help either.

the right way for heroes is C&C's way:
"this is still an infantry unit; don't be dumb and get crushed, or shot with a machinegun, or blown up by artillery, or..."

You're forgetting that the monkeylord costs considerably less resources to produce and can wreck the shit of a fatboy in a 1v1 as long as it's close enough to use it's laser. The stealth it has by default helps too.

Anon you don't get to make a post talking about how it has a comparable amount of fire power when it doesn't and expect the conversation NOT to be about the two units going at it.

Fatboys excel at demolishing fortifications and are merely good at anything else they might do, but not great.
In fact they make better PD than they do mobile attack units.

fatboys are used not as a direct fire combat unit but like mobile artillery. you bombard enemy positions from long range and slowly move forward while defending the fatboy with a bunch of other units.

you can also kite other land experimentals because you outrange all of them by quite a lot. just make sure you have radar coverage to make use of your range, and have air control to protect against strat bombers.

what, no. Tank awareness, hetzer (when marder was nerfed) and jagdpanzer were why you wanted the doctrine. 2 shrecks became available really late. By the time you get them the enemy has tanks. Those tanks can easily drop 2 models on a 3 man squad and then you drop them like crazy. And Vet 3 riflemen with shrecks is over and out.

Infantry in AoE II are inherently weaker and cheaper than cavalry and archers; it just happens that the Goths offer very cheap infantry from the Feudal Age, at the Castle Age get an anti-archer unit, and at the Imperial Age get technologies to drastically reduce training times. However, you pretty much have to earn it in a standard game; it is a civilization without any meaningful early economic bonuses, and a human opponent obviously doesn't want a Goths player to boom and get their deathball of infantry spam that makes it so easy to replace fallen units.

The only way around this for other civs is to make Hand Cannoneers, other anti-infantry units, or some really bulky infantry, Goths can also switch into other units but this can be predicted.

That is why there are different factions.
Rarely do you see RTS use them for more then being a different coat of detail though.

I've never been good at multitasking, and properly managing and economy while intelligently attacking as to not exhaust your resources and making sure you counter the enemy's units just seems nearly impossible to do correctly. Still, shame to see the genre die out.

Man, one of the things i love in COH and MOW is how the terrain gets fucked over time by the battles, where a village used to stand is now a field full of craters like it was WW1. Is very rare in other RTS.
I also love naval battles and RTS do them like shit because the ships are just "tank but on water"

All factions followed
>1 scout
>1 destroyer(Except Feds they got 2)
>3 cruisers(1 was artillery unit)
>1 frigate(Support buffs)
>1 science ship(Had 4 goofy powers)
>2 battleships
Which is really unfortunate.
It is as if the guys making it felt they had just another licensed game and wanted to be done with it.
Had some more love been put into it, the factions could have each been given a unique spin and structure.

>>383377834
Agree on the naval combat. Really ticked me of in AoEIII where one expects it to be a major part of the game as befits the era but it fell flat.
I recall one seeing something about a WW2 Naval RTS, Pacific front, but I did not catch the name and in my searches I have only come up with simulators, or that hybrid game where you could command either a plane or ship.
>>
>>383377834
ships COULD work as "tank on water", but they'd need something like the CoH tank controls plus some bonus features like ramming and boarding
>>
>>383352503

>>
>>383378161
Fleet Ops actually did a good job on that and made A2 a really good Star Trek RTS. I used to play MP but unfortunately, most people either have autism or rage quit after a while
>>
>>383378224
The thing about ships is that they are huge and full of weapons, but RTS have them as tank size with one gun only.
SupCom did them pretty well, they worked well with the game scale.
>>
>>383378509
Armada in general had a great modding community and it was for most part intuitive, modding as a beginner was really easy, it did get a bit crosseyed at the notepad editing.
I was always afraid of getting in to RTS MP out of fear of getting stomped,
and especially dodged FleetOps because it already at the time had a really small community.
Heres hoping that their new engine switch works out, but I checked recently and it seems there
already is drama going on behind the scenes.

Shit sucks.
>>
>>383378831
>>383378831
I thought that FO2 was cancelled. It's also a pity that Bridge Commanders MP died a few years ago. Kobayashimaru was great
>>
>>383377296
SupCom is really weak in the space department and the factions rely on the quantum gate network to move around. No quantum gates = no FTL capabilities and we know from the ending of the Cybran campaign that, once the quantum gates get fried, it takes a few years to get them operational again.

That being said, a SupCom ACU is basically a planet-bound von Neumann machine. And the buildtimes in game are canon, meaning that the universe gets extremely strong if it's not destroyed in a matter of hours. But then you whip out the planet busters and the ACU is fucked.

And apparently they are able to manufacture ACU:s only at their main strongholds since ACU:s can't outright make new ACU:s during missions and even the support commanders must be summoned. And even then the amount of ACU and the amount of personnel trained to use them is scarce, if we can believe the in game dialogue. All the parts where the setting makes favours to gameplay without any regard to in-universe plausibility make it very hard to compare against a harder Sci-fi universe.

If you know about FAF what the fuck is going on with the level two defence turrets? The Cybran one is practically useless while the Aion one oneshots large groups of enemies. Giving one faction bit better turrets so things are different is OK but that is ridiculous.

They heal up so fast and deal so much damage that it's almost impossible to take them out when the other person knows what he's doing. The fact that most units with stealth detection just get fucking obliterated doesn't make it any easier too.
But using them is fun
>>
>>383371009
UEF is probably the weakest faction and that you think otherwise shows how ignorant you are
Cybran gets to comfortably play 5 dimensional chess and force the opponent to react to everything
Aeon gets hover tanks as standard, and the best t2 mobile shields (that happen to hover)
Seraphim gets big ass shields and spammy bots

UEF gets T2 bots that cant cope with T1 spam, T2 tanks that are reliant on bad T2 bots for range and mobile shields for survivability, one T3 bot that loses trades with the T3 cybran bot of the same price and another T3 bot that cant cope with T1 spam
UEF ground game relies on building strong points on the field and the Aeon does it just as well

UEF, the best faction, has biggest guns on the battleships, best missile cruiser and an unique and very important shieldboat. Their units are bulkier than the rest and they have the best Point Defence turrets in general. Their T3 land units have the biggest first-strike damage known to man. They are somewhat vulnerable against kiddies who like to prolong games to be able to play around with experimentals because they have no direct close combat experimental.

Actually telling everything would take a while, so if the rest of the factions interest you I'll just link you to some other forums discussing the factions: https://www.reddit.com/r/supremecommander/comments/3mj7nh/supreme_commander_forged_alliance_factions/

This is bullshit, don't listen to this propagandistic Earth apologistic. Cybran are clearly superior because they understand how to transcend the limitations of the human mind. Brackman knew this, and made everything spider like, the superior way of traveling.

Cybran units heal each other and have the best T1 technology out there. Who even needs to get into higher tiers? nobody, that's ridiculous. They have developed an invisible scouting technique to know everything before anyone else knows they know. Stealth Scouts, baby. Once you get into higher techs you'll see how efficient spider everything can be. You can even spider a tank. That's right, a spider tank that shoots rockets and fucks everything like a middle range between artillery and in your face assault. Medusa Artillery shuts down non isolated circuits of the inferior races to fuck them with puny T1 Assault Bots. Imagine that.

Not even water is an impediment to spiders. Tired of water? you can build a destroyer boat that can fucking WALK when it reaches shore, because spider legs can be deployed and used as a walker to keep the onslaught going. Even at T3 the Cybran technology dominates. You can build the BRICK, a stupid concept that can only work thanks to Brackman's superior engineering. That's how you win at Supreme Commander.

Squares and Circles get the fuck out.

Eh. No.

The concept of populating celestial bodies sounds nice until you have to play around with the HORRENDOUS user interface and can't even see what the fuck is going on between the tiny units, and that's it if the game feels like working. The fucking game doesn't even work sometimes and gets stuck in the loading screen more often than not. And the actual strategy is pretty limited compared to what you should be doing, and the expansions that fix a lot of the issues are a nickle and dime milking and just... no. That shit is wrong.

of course first strike damage in T3 is completely worthless because staying power matters most there.

Good micro against UEF T3 involves having T1 in front to soak up their first strike damage as overkill and then following through with higher DPS units that dont have the same issues as the enemy

supcom exists in a "we don't fight outside of planets because planets are were the resources are and because space is a lot of nothing"

They have space capable ships (see Forged Alliance opening), but the standard operating procedure is to teleport to a planet with a commander or six, or 20, or whatever, build a base and resourcing, and then take your near exponential growth locusts and take the world.

All factions have artillery that doubles as anti orbital guns, the UEF T4 Mavor especially, plus nuke silos. Best part? All build times are in real time, so it takes a guy about ten minutes to put down a tank division with shields and artillery support and enough asf to cover them in about 25 minutes, from the instant the quantum gate rips open and he steps through.

After I finish this post I'm gonna see it again and I'm going to be so hyped. I remember it had this badass catchy music too, I don't remember what it sounded like but I know it's going to be amazing.

Tell me someone else played MACHINES

The real reason for RTS dying is SC2 setting the bar with the whole Esports thing at the same time as several major RTS franchises got burned really hard due to attempting to enter the console market (Supcom2, RA3). Since it's impossible to create a major esports title without Blizzard (or Valve) tiers of money, most devs would rather not try. Also there was a chain of nostalgia baiting RTS relatively recently (Grey Goo, Act of Aggression, Planetary Annihilation, 8-bit armies, but they were all dogshit. If there is a way to save RTS it's certainly not by pandering to nostalgiafags.

I wonder why more games don't have wargame's unit synergy and design
>>
>>383402383
Multiplayer in RTS games can be pretty demanding. Most of them require speed; Quickly setting queued orders, repeatedly producing/reinforcing units and microing them on the frontline. There's also a lot of focus on 1v1, both via ranking systems and emphasis on auto-matchmaking, it places more performance pressure onto a casual player than a team game would.

I think this is why some of the most fondly remembered RTS games either had custom game modes or a large pool of players for team games. It didn't matter if you were bad at or didn't like 1v1 since there were interesting customs, comp stomps or unranked 4v4 games to play.

a lot of the changes are really just due to using a completely new engine. every old engine-related bug is simply gone, because the old game engine isn't there any more; for instance, there's now an actual z-coordinate for arcing shots, so things actually have the proper impact timing. the world coordinate system and netcode is also better, so no more weird shit goes on with those.

Universe at war has a faction which has these huge walkers as a sort of centerpiece unit that both tanks, gives fire support and can call in smaller units, because it has hardpoints you can customize.

I agree with that, from strategical perspective DoW3's heroes are weird - they are separated from the rest of economy entirely. But the way their buffs and abilities tie in with the rest of the army is still great.
Try taking Stormboyz with kamikazee, Mek with scrap turrets and make mass deffkoptas, scrap upgrades aren't necessary. Obviously doesn't work in 1x1, but it's fun as fuck and I like coming up with those combinations of heroes/doctrines.
