As far as I know there's no particular class that's frowned upon, but certain items break the game, ruin the fun or are just plain shit (which will draw ridicule). Check the guide images to learn what's good and what isn't.

Also not picking 8 clovers as fast as possible is a good way to amass hatred.

There's a huge difference between normal play and playing with /v/. The rules /v/ plays with change up the game completely, making everything deadly and funballproducing, but allows you to select items.

Play the game solo first (or with friends) without any artifacts to learn how the game and the different classes operate. Once you feel you're not completely terrible you can start joining /v/'s games. If you join /v/ right away you're most likely going to get rekt and not have fun at all.

What artifacts? Vanilla and /v/ mode are pretty different but I guess I can give some general tips.

Knowing the map is more important what you might think. There are some spots you can stand in that will affect enemy spawns, not to mention some areas are easier to abuse enemy AI in. As a general rule you want to avoid wide open spaces, most enemies are faster than you are so you wont be able to outrun them and get swarmed. You want a lot of ledges, since most of the big enemies can go up them allowing you to sorta crowd control them, and a lot of ropes since most enemies cant really get you up there. As a general rule you should try to survive the countdown after activating tele above all, cleaning up the rest of the enemies is a lot easier when enemies stop spawning.
Also you can jump over most enemy attacks, so spam jump when in trouble. Most enemies have a pattern you can abuse if you look carefully enough.

A survivor crashlands on a planet and has to fight their way out.
Basically a 2d roguelike
enemies spawn of random types in random locations with a difficulty and timing based on how long you have spent in the run so far, with stages influiencing enemy types but not difficulty (as much as the timer does)
Each stage has a teleporter after which a new wave of enemies spawn along with a boss, after some time after the teleporter is hit, enemies stop spawning and once the player has killed all remaining enemies, they can progress to the next level
