Neither.
Samus defended herself against a hostile wild animal and the Crocomire defended itself against an invader to its territory.
Also the Crocomire seems to not be in it's natural habitat regardless, as its skin is melting and it is surrounded by lava that can kill it despite lava resistant creatures existing elsewhere there. And Samus doesn't NEED the Grapple Beam.

Mother Brain must have ordered Crocomire to block Samus' path even though the heat was harmful to him. Samus probably noticed that his skin was sloughing off and helped to put him out of his misery. Imagine the pain he was in because his skin was melting off That's why his skeleton appears later, to give Samus a hug

Would be pretty gross to hug a Crocomire though, oily ass skin with heaps of useless melted flesh hanging off. The skelly would be covered in burned meat.
Mother Brain is pretty fucking stupid if she ordered it to stand guard there though, it's unkillable with Samus's weaponry, it only recoils.
I would assume that Crocomire simply fell down there and it couldn't climb back up due to its immense weight. The thing is fat as fuck.
