Fun is holding back videogames.
>>
It's because standards have been raised and it's only getting harder to create original content.
>>
remember when games were 30 minutes long?

Wow
>>
Achivements have ruined games for me. Very rarely do I boot up a game to pursue my own goals, now it's mainly about hunting achievements.

There is an undeniable purity of design found in most videogames pre-2007 or so.
That being said, if you can't find any video games being released today that you find fun, maybe it's time you found a different hobby.
Yes, games have changed. Yes, many of those changes go against the playful spirit that video games used to have in droves. But that shit hasn't gone away entirely. This board dismisses indie games wholesale (with rare exceptions, see Hollow Knight) as tons of great, inventive titles fly by under the radar, unplayed - while everyone keeps bitching about how videogames are dead.

Yea me neither

Pretty much only single-player and co-op games can consistently be fun. The rise in popularity of PC games alongside the massive popularity spike in "Esports" led to multiplayer games largely becoming cesspools with irredeemable communities.

this guy gets it
/v/ takes hating things too seriously, and even considers it as a dedication.
First you learn from the older generation that complaining about things is a common state of mind, and before you know it, you've made a profession out of it.
Only after you fit into the /v/ mentality will you find some decency buried under all the hate. A lot of people don't come to /v/ for that, they come for a place to hate stuff, and that's the thing killing this board: it's treated as a public facility for shitting on "the popular thing" and nothing more.

there are people who will be born during the competitive e-sports era that we have today and remember that instead of the fun times we had as children with the original XBOX and PS1.
>>

I play a shit ton of fun new games but I think the medium is pretty much halted.

Like fuck movies had 100 years to evolve and they made leaps and bounds every decade. Everything has sort of stagnated now, its like 3d killed the momentum and the big budget studios trying to out do eachother with their yearly installments burned the remains.

I understand theres a huge push with the indie games but we're never going to see anything impressive because they will never have the budget.

in my opinion.

there's no room in video games for fun. If the public at large wants to look at games seriously, then we need to get rid of a lot of elements in order for the public to take them seriously like movies, tv, and books. Otherwise you're all just wasting your time and jerking eachother off. We need to support more AAA devs and less of these indie devs, because none of them know what they're doing. Nobody in movies ever got anywhere by just releasing movies at the sundance film festival. Certainly the first blockbuster ever wasn't made by some jack ass in his basement
>>
games were meant to be dreadful experiences that leave your horrified on an existential level

>tfw born in 96
>tfw didn't get to experience most of the xbox/ps2/gamecube era
>tfw parents wouldn't let me play games like halo so I never got to experience the golden days except when I was at friend's houses
I'm dangerously close to becoming a "le wrong generayshun" kind of guy who wishes he was born five to ten years earlier.
Pre-2000 stuff will become the dadrock of video games.

Explain how there's no room in video games for fun.

I thought you were going to explain that statement, but then you just went off on a tangent about how you think indie games are inherently bad.
>>
No. I've been playing games since the NES and the amount of utter garbage I've played because I begged my parents to buy it for me is astonishing. Those games certainly weren't meant to be fun, they were meant to get your fucking money.

Good taste. Always fucking loved JSRF on that Sega GT 2002/JSRF combo disc I had. Sad MS became such shit.

Big AAA studios know how to take gaming seriously. Look at Starcraft, Overwatch, Battlefield, Dark Souls, and Battlefront 2. These are serious games that everyone will know and enjoy. Most of them even have sporting events around them, so already the public eye is beginning to take these seriously. Most indie games will never get this kind of exposure because they're too cartoony or just silly. Nintendo needs to drop this if anyone wants to look at them beyond being "kids games" because all they push out is games targetted to ten year olds. Platinum Games and Capcom already have their shit together. If we continue to support these companies, then gaming will finally have a proper and serious platform.
>>
all competitive games today are very unfun

there used to be an air of sportsmanship in most online games back in the day, we're talking late 90s, early 00s, games such as quake, UT, etc

then around 2004 onwards that sportsmanship started to become strained and by 2008 had almost completely died-out from the vast majority of games, as the internet and online gaming became more widespread to "normal" people

now all we have is players who act like cunts all the time, in every fucking game
>>
>games used to be designed without teams of psychologists and engineers specifically trying to manipulate you into spending more money
Zynga really did ruin vidya

Infinite had some interesting ideas, but a significant portion of the original vision had to be cut and it sacrificed mechanics in favour of story.

A good video game marries both very well.

this shit had me too anon, until I played and got addicted to an mmo. then the mmo progress got me instead.
Then BotW came out and have been redeemed.
I'm playing it again now, for nothing other than fun.
No fast travel, just taking my time enjoying the game again.

32yo fag here and I never found fun in making a gae so hard that i have to apply effort just to not die, or die consistently until I git gud by spending weeks of repetitive actions.
I play vidya for fun, and I play a shit load of games and genres.
On the flip side I don't want a game so easy that i can't even be bothered to apply effort.
I prefer games that either immerse me, or are just laid back and fun.
