Yes, for lots of reasons. The big reason we called it Mother 4 to begin with is because after the translation patch came out, everyone wanted to make Mother 4. There were at least five projects I can recall off the top of my head called Mother 4, like with all the Metroid 2 remakes way back when. Mother 4 also gives the game a certain set of expectations in terms of plot, and since from day one I wanted the game to stand entirely on its own while reusing very little it felt like a natural step to take... Especially with what happens to Metroid 2 remakes these days.

All that time and effort for a free game. Why not make major changes and just make your own rpg?

Even if you change the name and keep it as a Mother tribute or something, even if it surpasses the originals, it won't revive the real game series. Nintendo gives no fucks about it at all, and any legal issues they will do will be purely standard procedure, not because they care.

I personally did. I've been playing Pokémon hacks for about five years and Prism was in development for about ten, so I've been following its development and updates for quite a while. I remember back when it was going to have a Stop&Swap feature with the creator's previous hack like Banjo-Kazooie was going to have with Tooie, though just like the game that inspired it they found it too hard to get working and cancelled the whole thing.
