I get playing something like MGS which aims more towards realism(for a PS1 game at least) with filtering textures. But who would willingly want that with MML? Like the game looks so fucking good with the hard pixels, It's like you are playing a SNES game in 3D. It's one of the best looking games on the PS1 because of it I think. Since they knew how to build the graphics around the awful early 3D graphics hardware unlike most devs of the era where everything just looks muddy.
