It's a good enough game but the combat system is extremely repetive and the level design is just straight up nonexistent. There's also very little in the way of fun optional stuff to do in the game, it's a ver barebones games. Nevertheless the characters and story are pretty good, the interactions between party members in particular are really fun, but it is still super tropey and cliched (even by JRPG standards) which makes playing the game sometimes feels like you're watching a mediocre anime.

Honestly, both games are vastly different and the only thing they have in common is they are both JRPGs. Persona 5 is turn based battle, with a lot more focus on the main character interacting with the confidants. It can feel a bit slower because there are time gaps before you can start the next dungeons. Berseria's battle system is action based, which can make the battle quicker and compared to older Tales games the battle system is a lot more simplistic. The cast interacts as a unit opposed it only being just the MC interacting with a single character at a time. Personally I enjoyed both plots, but are riddled with cliches, but fun to watch from start to finish.

The dungeons in both games left a lot to be desired, but I find this to be a problem with most modern JRPGs. Neither one of them felt too difficult and none of the puzzles really challenging. Ultimately I think both games are worth a play, but it's really based on your own personal preference on where to start.

Not to say you are "forcing" a direct translation on people per-se, and this argument isn't particularly aimed at you, I just get annoyed when people complain that the "English version is too different from the Japanese" in most cases. Of course there are exceptions and examples of translations going too far to the point that the original intent of the writer is lost, but most of the time, it's reasonable and necessary.

I've played and gotten the platinum for both games, so I've spent an absurd amount of times playing them both. I can say for sure that I enjoyed them both, though I liked Persona 5 more.

From a gameplay perspective, I can see the argument against both games; they're JRPGs, not exactly the most complex games to design. It was the characters that mostly did it for me. I liked all of the playable characters in both games, namely Eizen and Magilou in Berseria, and Makoto and Yusuke in P5

I'm not really into VN's, but the beat'em up style of ToB was great to me, the areas had a lot of exploration, there's tons of characters to play as that all play differently, learning how to effectively combo each character was super fun, there's tons of replayability due to NG+ and the grade shop, there's tons of dungeons and post-game content, lots of costumes to collect, tons of sidequests

I've played older persona games and it just...wasn't my thing. SMT too. I've only played a few tales games that I liked, and ToB is probably my favorite next to Vesperia. Its just an overall good romp. Bonus points for how entertainingly edgy it is, and the protag has probably the best psychotic break in any game I've ever seen.

Just got the P5 play today, took me 153 hours because I had to get to the end of the game again because I failed to max out all of the confidants the first time

Berseria, I don't remember off the top of my head but I'm going to say somewhere in the neighborhood of 130 hours. Had to get to the end of the game in NG+ for that one as well.

That still shouldn't be such a long second playthrough. I got the platinum from scratch on the NA release which consisted of my 4th and 5th runs of the game so I might have a bias in that regard, but you should really have been able to shave off 20 hours or so just with the scene skip.

On NG+ Chaos mode in berseria becomes piss easy. I'm level 28 and blasting through all bosses and regular battles in seconds. I actively have to hold back in order to get a mystic arte out or I'll end the battle too quickly.
