That was actually better because FF7 was kind of a big deal for it's technical changes (3D world, sci-fi setting, streamlined combat). FF9 tried to marry SNES era with PS1 era.

I'm kinda sad how FFXV turned out. One of my favorite things about JRPGs is getting new party members and learning about them. In FFXV it felt like that has been done way before the game even starts.

XII's cast for the most part would have held up, but the way they told the story inbetween gameplay was pisspoor.

Most of the wacky Cutscenes happened too far and few, mid to endgame they'd pop up so rarely that you rarely got any character interaction until the final clash of scenes in the Bahamut. I remember doing hunts and other shit then suddenly getting to Pharos and being reminded of the character's charms alongside NPCs like Al-Cid. But then it was straight back to 3hour dungeon crawls. It's battle system didn't help in that regard, I didn't dislike it but it didn't do a good job of breaking up the action.

Which is funny because at least FFX had the characters wisecrack in battles, even if they were only one-time voice lines.

A 3ds game with a job system similar to FF5. Its good but, the last half drags.

IX gave me more or less everything I could wish from a modern Final Fantasy game apart from the lack of a job system and from it being too easy, which then again is a problem the franchise as a whole suffers from. It felt like one final giant celebration of everything the franchise had been about up until that point, almost like Square saying "Here. Have this one final offering to remember what things used to be like, because everything is going to change from here onwards and our stories and our worlds will never be like this again".

Its rendition of the Prelude was also very faithful, which is something that seems to more or less be directly correlated to the quality of each individual title.

There are 3 problems

1. Since the Squaresoft-Enix merger and the spirits within debacle, Squeenix is hesitant to make errors on their products, espcially Dragon Quest domestically and FF internationally. Still, they spend gobs of money on FFs only them to be met with lukewarm sales, eroding the fanbase every time. Management, in a word, is retarded.

2. The production time between games has increased by staggering amounts. Excluding the online games, which have different development cycles, the games before the mergers came out, at most, every 3 years. The gaps between 10, 12,13, and 15 are 4, 3, and 7. Really, since the original staff left, I think they have had huge problems with finding competent directors (hence why they tried Nomura, only to relieve him of the project since they wanted him on Kingdom Hearts).

3. They need a better creative team. It feels like they lean on Nomura WAY too much for visuals, especially for 10, 13, and 15. Other production feels derivative of itself (FF10 zanarkand and FF13 Oerba lead ups and arrival come to mind).

Really, the problem is the company as a whole. This isn't Square or Squaresoft. It also isn't Final Fantasy. It's FINAL FANTASY (all caps since FFVII), which is not the same game series you may have grown up with. Either move on, or accept it will be different and/or terrible.
