Honestly wizardry 8 is the best I think, in that the character creation and actual gameplay doesn't become a chore.

I'll believe it when I see it. He's been claiming the same shit every year and nothing has come of it. If the 2005 version was complete, then it wouldn't have taken him 12 fucking years to get it released and STILL be delaying the game over and over.

The only question is whether he's so autistic that he actually believes his own bullshit, or that he's well aware that his game is garbage and just keeps delaying it to keep the truth from coming out.

I am amazed at the shovelware people pay $50 for without thinking but believe because Grimoire has an old fashioned aesthetic it must be worth less that those titles. Brain size isn't directly related to intelligence, brain structure is. And since there are no surviving Neanderthal brains there's not a lot we can say about that, but since Neanderthals lacked the intelligence to create a culture or written language, it's safe to say they were subhuman.

>>
I think I figured it out.
The reason he refuses to release grimwah, is because it's all he has, his only claim to fame, and likely the only reason not to kill himself. he keeps procrastinating, and perfecting every single detail, because he knows that eventually he will have to release it, and then the only thing to give his life any meaning will be gone.
>>
>>383262997
Also when he signs off on an official release (and not just an early demo) he'll have no more excuses to ward off all criticism and he'll have to face up to the reality that he wasted 23+ years of his life.

Shores of Hazeron was a very ambitious project where you could start alone on a planet in the middle of the galaxy and create an empire of NPCs with farms, buildings, ships, etc. You could gather your ships, travel through space, and fight other player empires or ally with them. There was an impressive amount of customization with accompanying time commitment. The player base was a small group of autists (me included), but the financial strain was too much for Haxus. He ended up gutting the game into a pathetic state and making it pay to play. That was a couple of years ago though, I haven't kept up with it since.

15/11/97
I come from an era when speed was everything - to survive as an
independent contractor you had to be superhuman, there was no choice, it
was pure necessity. Most of today's stable programmers are like plump,
well-fed poodles who sleep on satin cushions compared with the lean, mean
school of 8K boundaries and hidden ROM storage I cut my teeth in. It is a
hideous nightmarish world of sleeplessness, instant noodles, jolt cola
and keeping the front door jammed with your foot against your landlord
while screaming long distance you know damn well the game is selling, you
were just in Sears and their computer department said it was going off
the shelf as fast as they could stock it, where the hell is the royalty
check?!? In this Darwinian world of games design, most modern programmers
are like ALF or E.T. whereas I would be more like the Queen Egglayer from
ALIENS.

***
Grimoire is now 250,000 lines of extremely trim, packed code! And it has
been seriously optimized lately to eliminate a lot of code that was
replaced with more efficient C++ objects!! The executable is 900K!! The
combat module is 50,000+ lines by itself!!

Sir-Tech has had nearly 17 years of development of the Wizardry series,
no author after Andrew Greenberg ever started from scratch for them. All
of them, even David Bradley, built on existing code and enhanced it. I am
the only person in the universe since the Big Bang who has ever written a
first-person RPG this complex by himself from scratch with no help,
encouragement or aid from anyone in the galaxy except me while holding
down a full-time job.

RPGs are really HARD compared with other genres. I am not asking for
pity, again, but believe me if you'll just think about how many problems
could pop up when God was creating the world, you'll get some idea of the
difficulties posed for someone who is merely superhuman like myself. The
details go on and on like a bad dream.

24 minutes out of every 7 weeks maybe. That's the secret behind Grimoire.
>>
Who have you worked with in the past who has given you the impression they are competent to test a game of this size and complexity with an entire team of Q&A people paid to be on the job 24/7? That person lied to you, it's Dunning Kruger. They don't even realise what is being talked about.

In my final once-over before making up the Steam package I discovered one thing after another. Nothing major or crashing or even a glitch that would keep you from finishing the game. Just some things I should do before releasing it. I am working on it around the clock now, it will be out shortly. It was predictable IF you understand how big and complex the game is.

holy fuck all of this sounds like some god awful programming

I wouldn't complain if this shit was written in C, but it's C++

Does this man not know how object orientation or interfaces or generics or delegates or anything related to proper modularization work? There's no fucking reason to make your code so fucking cross-dependent that one change breaks shit in 15 other modules.
What am I saying. This isn't even modularity. This is probably just some mess. Most likely because he learned programming somewhen in the 80s and just sticked with whatever sequential garbage he learned there.

>b-b-b-but it's optimized

A game that is 23 years old doesn't need to be optimized.
Not on that level.
As long as your garbage code doesn't slow down or break the engine you're fine.
But at this point even a shitty slow engine could be handled by modern PCs.

Don't forget kids. The three deadly sins of programming are:

>writing everything from scratch
>premature optimization
>lack of modularization

And holy fuck it only dawns to me right now that cleve might be guilty of all of these.

It's probably easier to do it in bit modern way at least - so you have rudimentary Opengl viewport and camera. All the walls are just flat quad polygons. You can make a 2d map and then just extrude the walls out for example, just to make something quick.

I think being turn based it actually _helps_ things which is completely opposite what Cleve has been claiming.

The best part, is that if the game ever releases, the majority of people that play it will dislike it because it's too contrived, overblown and messy.

Because that's how development for this shit works. He had a game back in 97 and he kept adding stupid shit on top of it year after year. Do you honestly believe that, of the 20 attributes, even a quarter of them are useful? How about the 50 skills? How many of those are shit you absolutely must dump? I'm betting 40, at the very least.

Of the 300 maps, over half of them will be shit and people will bitch about them (assuming they get that far)

Of the 600 hours (read: 100 hours), the vast majority of that time will feel drawn out and like useless padding.

This game will be a bitter reminder that the actual AAA developers that we call shit are the ones who actually know what the fuck they are doing.

Cleve, I am one of the Indiegogo backers, and I have been loosely following Grimoire development for 15 years or so. I've been skeptical but decided to go ahead with funding to show support (and it was easier to consider because I was going through a divorce and using marital funds, so I essentially had the ex paying half). I went ahead and ponied up $100. For me, this sort of game would be well worth it. I knew it was a gamble, so if the game were never released, I couldn't be too upset.

I, however, am becoming disheartened by the multiple promises of release dates, after backing, that never coalesce.

I really thought you'd come through on May 31, but you didn't. In the meantime, I reinstall Wizards & Warriors and have been playing it ever since. I thought that I could put it down yesterday and pick up Grimoire, but that didn't happen.

I hope that you're serious about releasing this ASAP and that you'll use vacation time from your day job to finish it. It would be perfect for me if Grimoire were be released in the next, say, 12 hours, because it would coincide with my 40th birthday.

If not, though, I hope that you put in time during the week until it's released.

I'm about at the point at which I'll just completely give up. If I finish Wizards & Warriors and there's still no Grimoire, that will be too much for me.

I wouldn't be surprised if he actually touched the game in years or even fucking made it himself or there is even a game other than the demo itself.
The reason why it won't come out might not be because of the fact that he is a perfectionist or the development of the game is all he has along with attention it brings but the whole game itself that has been on progress for 23 years might be the fucking demo itself and nothing more.

No such thing as bad publicity. Watch. This has only generated all new levels of anticipation.

A relative called me long distance to tell me that deliberately missing the launch date would have to be the most brilliant publicity move of any indie game dev in the history of computer gaming. Approaching hysterics.

I didn't have the heart to tell him I did not intentionally miss the release date.

Bloodshot eyeballs inflamed to 8x normal size, mucus from nose pooling on floor around chair, been doing 20 hour days with nothing but expired beef jerky to keep me from starving to death. My wife has brought a bedpan into my study and placed it under my chair like that episode of South Park so I no longer have to break to go to the bathroom.

Almost ... there ... just need to test that last issue number #10209373739829 to make sure it is still fixed after changing item #0928434923098 to match up with issue #9042353290215.

Game looks so utterly beautiful that tears are mixing with the mascara as they run down my cheeks. I ... never ... dreamed ... my game would finally look this good.

Will be working all day to complete, as soon as I have verified remaining areas that underwent some editing I will begin building deployment packages.

One last minute change I am introducing is versioning for the savegames and side-by-side execution of updates so any future patches of Grimoire will NOT break any savegames out there. Obviously nobody wants to start their 600 hours of play over just because I added romancing and bread baking interfaces. So once saved your savegame will be legal until you complete that game. You may not see new additions to the map but your current game will always be completable after you have started it.

Sorry but I am just one guy and normally during this crunch time on any software project you have more than one person to help you when the going gets tough. It's all on me and it only gets fixed because I fix it, I can't delegate that bug to a team member.

Almost there. Game is looking ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE. As soon as it is ready will post deployable package to Steam for approval.

It's real
>>
>>383258434

You want to know the craziest part? It actually exists. It exists so much that people were able to play a beta of it ON 1998.

There's videos of it
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b7xuWdgiSc

It exists so much that there were people that tested it and can confirm tons of fact about the game.

It exists so much that there was a super demo with tens of hours of content released in 2013

Again, you can confirm this with videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqo9lsOeWGg

It exists so much that it was recently data-mined to the point that we know the names of all locations and NPCs

The guy is just crazy and refuses to release it because he knows his game is not worth the 23 years of wait. And the longer he waits, the more he needs to delay it.

6ft my ass, they were adapted for colder environments and had much shorter legs and more compacted bodies. Also the upper limit for their brain size was closer to 1600cc and that doesn't really mean too much. Bigger doesn't mean better, if anything they were much more likely to have less evolved brains. Hell it's likely that because they had such large eyes they may have had too much of their brain devoted to seeing. These means other aspect such as socializing and problem solving would have been pushed aside.

On the contrary. He works like a Neanderthal. You need to check your lore.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDyXSCd2Lp0

>Experts examining the lascaux caves in France discovered that in some instances, the same design had been painted over and redone hundreds of times. The resulting conclusion was inescapable and challenged the limits of human understanding. Obviously, the Neanderthals were the most severely mentally retarded hominids who ever existed. They were much worse than mere perfectionists. They were obsessed with revision and retrospection. Everything they did artistically always had to be perfect. At least we can be glad they are all long extinct. Well, most of them, anyways

The best place to start is to read the RPG codex thread for Grimoire, it's over 1000 pages long...

http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/grimoire-the-game-the-legend-the-con-the-thread-resurrection.75724/

And then the earlier posted archive.org sir-tech discussion. There's couple of links to USENET news discussion too.

He didn't have any awareness back then and he doesn't have it now. He still refuses to admit Wiz VIII, made by other people, not him or Bradley, was actually pretty great. He's a jealous admirer of Wiz VII and VIII is his Chad nemesis, taking his gaming crush into a wrong direction.

This is badly worded but this is scientific fact more or less. We didn't kill the neanderthals, we were airheaded hot bimbos they fucked until they were 98% us. From an end game perspective we were superior because we came out on top, but from a practical every day perspective they were better than us at tool making and hunting.

Just watch Matt's interview with Sirotek and the case is all clear. It's pretty obvious what was happening in Australia. Stones of Arnhem was supposed to be _maybe_ bearing Wizardry name and it was meant to be perhaps a spin off kinda product, certainly not a direct sequel.

But it wasn't going anywhere. Cleve got butt-mad from the fact Sirotek eventually closed the project down because there weren't any visible results. They produced big amount of artwork and such and some of the stuff they made was without Sirtech's knowledge (i.e. those anal monsters for example). From that day Cleve has been fanatically obsessed with that event...

The end.

They were stronger and arguably better hunters, but they were also stupid and unable to adapt. The weaker humans used their superior brains to adapt to changing circumstances while the Neanderthals starved to death, going extinct without ever developing a culture or even a language.

Saying Neanderthals were better than Sapiens is like saying gorillas are better than modern humans.

C64 was hugely popular both in Europe and US. After that reign, PC took over in US while in Europe Amiga/ST were more popular for a while.

>Wizards & Warriors
real talk though, that game is lit af

Buggy as shit and nigh unplayable on modern OS, even after patching, but it is seriously good.

- When you first enter the Naga temple, you can see the Naga chick slither past in a hallway further down. If that doesn't happen, it means she's frozen in the hallway, won't be killable when you reach her later on, and you can't progress the game.

- In the Naga temple, there's a tunnel which is almost too tight to squeeze through. You have to select the smallest person in your party and rub yourself on every angle and just pray it lets you in.

- Rotary room in Atlantis doesn't turn. I've managed to fix it in some instances by spamming vision-obscuring spells that for some reason would turn the rotary room a few inches. Because it's a + junction, you basically have to sit there and spam spells non-stop until it turns to the hallway you want. Bear in mind the whole room is underwater so you have to do it while casting water-breathing inbetween.

- No scroll bar on the skill screen. Once you collect too many skills, one of them will be booted off the bottom of the screen and you can never level it again.
- The second guild quest in the pirate town is to catch a leprechaun. The third quest is to kill a Sphinx. You have to kill the sphinx to reach the Leprechaun, so you can literally never finish the final quest.
