Yes, what's weird is how they deny this and then pretend that it's all obvious when you'd only be sure about how it all works either in retrospect or because you looked up a wiki. There's no way of knowing beforehand if leveling up a stat doesn't have a hidden mechanic attached to it, so its impossible to rule out the idea that some subtle shit is going on that you just aren't consciously aware of.

Take fucking stamina recovery for example. Chief example of a super important 'hidden' stat that can be affected by various things in each game, but it's not always clear to what extent or if certain effects stack.

Fighting games are way more obtuse than Souls is. But he's right about hollowing at least. That's clearly supposed to work way differently that it did, as the way your soft humanity glows when you're human seems to indicate that something special is going on, but it literally doesn't matter and you get the bonuses off it even if you're hollowed. The game takes pains to give off the impression that being hollow is a meaningfully disadvantageous thing (which it actually is in every other game in the series), but all it basically means most of the time is that you can't summon people, and if you don't want to you have no reason to care and you otherwise just waste soft humanity given that you can otherwise recover that from your bloodstain. It's a really dumb implementation of a staple concept of the series.
