I thought Persona 5 would be my GotY until I played NieR: Automata. I simply haven't felt there have been any games as good as those in a while.

Last western game I played and enjoyed a lot was actually Titanfall 2. Single player was great, though short, and multiplayer is better than any other shooter out there currently. Shame it released at the worst fucking possible time.

Persona 4 Golden on Vita is the best P4. The vita/psp Persona 3 Portable is the worst. You want the emulated version and I can't tell you if the PS2 upgrade, P3FES is better than any others, I just know that the removal of walking around in the school and town parts of P3P make it really like a visual novel.

Persona 4 Golden is definitely better than Persona 4.

For Persona 3 it's a little hairy. There's no reason to play the original version, but you do have to choose between FES and Portable. FES is just a straight upgrade in terms of features and added content over the original. If that was all that came out, it'd be as definitive as 4 Golden. But in 3 vanilla and 3 FES, you can't directly control your party members, just give them commands that the AI interprets. In P3 Portable, you can directly control them (like in 4, and 5), but the overworld when you aren't in dungeons is reduced from an actual 3D area you walk around in to a visual novel style point and click, and cutscenes are just visual novel style sliding character portraits instead of being supplemented by seeing the models move around and animate in the environment.

I'm pretty sure Portable also removes getting tired in dungeons, or at least makes it take longer, letting you press on further in one sitting. In general, Portable's changes are to make the game easier, but come at the expense of presentation and some of FES's features. Some people swear by being able to control their party members, though.

Portable also has a remixed story mode where you play as a girl character and the social links are changed to reflect that, but it's best saved for a repeat playthrough rather than your first.

I don't know anything about vita emulation but playstation TVs should still be relatively cheap. They were cheap as fuck but they aren't being produced anymore. If you can't think of any other vita or psp games you'd ever want to play, then you won't be upset about having to emulate the ps2 Persona 4. It's still great.

P4 tries to string along a story throughout the game, but most of it is slice-of-life moments that barely rely to the main plot.
