How far are you?
What charms are you using and which do you find the most useful?

What's your favorite boss so far?

absolute madman
I'm up to the mantis bosses, that dash master charm is objectively S-tier, no other charm even comes close.

I'm just waiting for the new content, it's coming this month right?

I don't see the point of the dash master charm to be honest, and I've beaten the game 3 times.

Sadly my save file from pirated version is not working so i'm going to start all over again, which would be sad normally, but the game is so awesome than I'm more than happy to play it again. And again. And maybe speedrun it a couple of times afterwards.

There's no set of charms that will make the game super easy. It's already pretty easy but if you are really ass just use a guide, look up help for boss fights you're having trouble with, and get all the upgrades you can whenever you get stuck. Certain charm sets work better with certain bosses and situations.

For example I was having trouble with the Collector boss because every time I would get near him to attack he kept fucking me up. So I used charms that make your magic stronger and just blasted him over and over without touching him.

Near the end there's a long platforming sequence that will fuck you up. But if you use the Hiveblood charm you have essentially infinite tries.

Here, install this mod, it makes it super easy.

Patience.

Radiance is a boss that doesn't really leave itself open to hyperpunishment like other bosses, so it's really just a case of just avoiding the projectiles and chipping at it.

Or you can do that cheese build that's like stalwart soul, shaman stone and some soul building charms to basically just pump Abyss Soul spamming into it and kill it in I think 16 full hits.

Probably Mantis Lords, I had the most fun fighting them with zero upgrades and only a few shitty charms. It was both the hardest and most enjoyable fight for me. Hornet was fun too, not difficult but fun.

Looks like we can finally have actual Hollow Knight threads again. I hope the upcoming boss fights are hard, looks like we're getting a buffed Dung Defender.
>>
>>383250084
Him and Zote.

Dung Defender should be alright. He just suffers from what a lot of the bosses do - the player lacks damage negation options apart from the one dodge upgrade that has a pretty big cooldown, which means the bosses can't be hyper aggressive, which means the devs just kinda prolong the fight by give the boss weirdly long periods of practical invuln.

A dream Zote would be incredible.

Also the prequel comic sucked.

Beat my 100% run

I'd love to try and go for all the steam achievement, but I really don't want to try to 100% steel soul mode. I just imagine getting near the 100% mark and dying to one of the few bosses left or god help me dying to the radiance after all that work.

Most useful charms were pride or hiveblood. I never expected to use hiveblood, but swapping out quick focus for it saved me soul I could instead use offensively.

Mantis lords were the best boss
and they're the best wives
>>
>>383251301
Probably so that you could reliably use it as an offensive tactic against fatty enemies. Like those tunnel-blocking mask/scythe spiders with the three hit combo in deepnest.

>I just imagine getting near the 100% mark and dying to one of the few bosses left or god help me dying to the radiance after all that work.
Radiance isn't required for 100%. (Trial of Fools is, though).

You just quit the game when you hit 1-2 health and restart from the nearest bench to avoid that bullshit.

>>383251406
100% SS isn't all that hard, since you already know where everything is, you can just stock up on shards as early as possible and get fragile strength - it'll keep you at about one nail upgrade level during the early game.
Also, Jiji (shade revive NPC) is replaced with another one that trades the previously useless rancid eggs for cash, somewhere in the region of 700-800 for each, so if you have at least two eggs buy the simple key from Sly early on and you'll immediately make your money back and then some, depending on how many eggs you managed to find by then.
In this respect SS is even easier than regular mode because you'll be swimming in geo before even half the game is over, instead of the final quarter, letting you buy more charms/slots/items earlier when it matters.
>>
>>383252436
The extra damage charm is great, but when it breaks I want to kill myself.

>>
>>383252526
I mean to say, fragile strength will effectively *add* a nail upgrade level in the early game, later as you upgrade it becomes exponentially more powerful and you'll already be one-shorting a lot of stuff after just two forges.

>>383252741
I do agree that the early game is horribly slow until you get wall-jump, but seeing as it's possible to beat the game in under two hours total, it's just as much you not knowing what to do as the game being slow paced at the start. >>383245189
I've progressed pretty far, so how does beating the game work?

Do I have to start a new game when I beat it, do I continue, what? I want to get 100% on my first run because I'm a completionist, but I also just plain feel like challenging the boss.
>>
>>383254459
My personal route is through City of Tears, through Fungal Wastes, then up that back way through Queen's Gardens. That way you only have to fight the two mantises and just spell spam both.
>>
>>383254570
Nah, if you reload your beat save it just starts you from your last save.
>>
Alright, do I need to kill all the ghosts to obtain 1800 ?

I feel like I killed all ghost bosses and found every fucking tree and I am missing like 400 for 1800
>>
>>383254459
They don't res pawn unless you rest, anon. Clear a path.
>>
>>383254570
After you beat the "Final boss" you basically just reload at the save point before the boss and can continue to play as normal.
>>
>>383254720
you don't need to kill any ghosts to get 2400
>>
>>383254720

>>
>>383254720
>I feel like I killed all ghost bosses and found every fucking tree and I am missing like 400 for 1800
No, you missed a bunch of trees and dream warriors, then.

Ghosts give you jack shit in essence. You don't even need to do all the trees, you can miss a couple.
>>
>>383254836
Yeah, sure. I push it to Conqueror's once I'm at a +3 Nail and save Trial of Fools for a fully upgraded vessel.
>>
>>383254459
If you have all the grubs at this point, ewuip their charm, quick slash and fragile strength, wreck any enemy you come across. Also do as >>383254665 says, fewest enemies this way.
>>
>>383254807
you mean the ghosts who chill and you can fight against them? yeah, how many are there so I can compare? The last one I did was the one behind the shadow door.

On my map aren´t any trees or warriors anymore..

>>383254856
>>383254754
alright thanks! Ghost bosses are the one you can just challenge right? How many of them are there. I didn´t finish hollow knight, the king, and last trial of the fools and I think I am just missing 10 people on my hunters notes
>>
>>383255135
I mean the dream versions of bosses you've already fought. Go back to the first boss, Soup Master, and Broken Vessel and smack their corpse with the dream nail.
>>
>>383255135
check all the bosses you've already fought (champion, soul master, lost kind, etc.) you can fight them a second time for essence
>>
Any tips on the Collector?
>>
Not too far. I just got the dream nail. I have like 5 fucking different places to go, this game opens up a bit too much.

It's pretty decent, what makes me a bit weary is that there's still DLC to come and I feel like I might put the game to rest after I finish and not touch it. I don't know how it will work on this kind of game.

Just bumrush the bosses of each area if it's overwhelming you, and then once you're done with that you can decide at your own pace if it's worth bothering with getting all the shit.

It's one of those games that gets so much faster on a second playthrough it's not even funny.

I beat the game yesterday with about 30 hours played. Best ending, all items, only thing I'm missing is the Journal and the Trial of Fools.

This is my top game of all time now. I didn't even HAVE a top game of all time before. It's fantastic. My only complaints are that backtracking gets a bit annoying once you hit the "cleaning up all the items" phase", and that they made achievements for speeding the game, beating the game without dying, and beating the game without dying WITH 100% COMPLETION. I like getting all the achievements for games I love, but I HATE one-life modes because if you die late into it, you've wasted all the time you spent, and the tension keeps it from being fun to me.

The combat is great, the exploration perfectly captured that sense of discovery and dread I love so much in Metroid and Dark Souls, and the plot is suprisingly involved, told in the drip-feed Dark Souls style I love so much. I had several moments of surprise as I pieced together things about the situation, my character, and the reason behind all the problems.

I love it.
>>
>>383255891
Not really. You can summon your phantom if you unlock the cave in Dirtmouth and bring the NPC a rancid egg, you could try that.
>>
>>383255941
>>383255956
Thanks, I bought both the key and the rotton egg but had no idea what the person meant when she was talking about having no regrets.
>>
>>383255946
Beating the game without dying isn't hard. You just quit if you fuck up too many times and have 1-2 health left.
>>
>>383255704
Well it makes sense, because you know where everything is instead of gambling on getting into the right rooms and fucking up. Even though there's signs all over the place.
>>
>>383254665
What is this back way? I hit a dead end when entering queens garden from fungal wastes (the room with the infected guy).
>>
>>383247179
I got a blue screen when I was fighting 2 of those bugs you can only kill with the beam. I figured an intensive fight was just too much for my shitty laptop to handle, so I play in 960x540 now. Even then the laptop gets really hot while playing
>>
Did I fuck up by selling things? I really wanted to get more of everything that I could use and I had like 3k worth of collectibles.
>>
>>383254228
Not even. Defender Crest to fend off the flying mistakes and you're gucci
>>
>>383256289
Oh, there's a shortcut if you go through Queen's Gardens from the proper entrance, go around and unlock it. Opens up the exit to the infected guy's house.

>>383256345
Nah, that's the only use for relics.

I've never bothered selling all of them since the game runs out of things to spend Geo on really fucking quickly.

easy dream boss strategies:
Soul tyrant - even sped up, his attack patters are quite predictable. it's not really possible to get any sort of 'heavy' attacks off on him, so just focus on nail damage and whatever else would help with a drawn-out fight. one possibility is shape of unn + quick focus + soul catcher + fragile strength. this will let you effectively heal up during his fight. during phase two, if you fell with full or near-full health, just hammer away at him and tank the orbs, you can kill him in one cycle.

Lost kin - also rather easy, because his style is mainly shutting down players who try too much fancy acrobatics, if you just bum rush him, you'll realize he doesn't have all that much HP and staggers easily. equip fragile strength, quick slash, and the rest with any blue health you have. just run into his face and keep spamming attack till he dies.

Failed Champion - hard or laughable depending on when you choose to challenge him. if before you free all grubs, you want quick slash, mark of pride, fragile strength and last point on whatever you want. try to stay as close to him as possible and always go underneath him when he jumps, attacking all the while, don't jump or move away for any reason other than if you see him charging up a wave attack.
if you do have final grub charm, equip that + fragile strength + quick slash and again last point doesn't matter. now what you want to do is mainly damage him with your wave attack, and as soon as you manage to stagger him the first time, the fight is effectively over, because when he jumps to the center of the room to chimp out, you can keep on hitting him with waves all the while and he'll get staggered immediately once he's done, stun-lock to victory.
>>
>>383256427
>I've never bothered selling all of them since the game runs out of things to spend Geo on really fucking quickly.

you just sell em till he runs out of unique dialogue for each item

>>
why is the map system so awkward? why do I have to equip a compass and buy all that shit near the beginning of the game? it should just be an automatic map
>>
>>383257561
Quickly tap jump dash to safely get over the first pit, and make sure to not push forward when dash over the last.

If in doubt just practice getting through the room/route a few times without the flower.
>>
>>383257968
Ill be honest, im having a REALLY bad time with this shit, I've literally been trying to deliver this flower for about 6 hours now. messing up the dash across the spikes in that room and then having to do the entire goddamn trek again is by far the most frusturating thing in the entire game.

Is there any way to save scum this or something?
>>
>>383257561
remember that jump height is equal to how long you hold the button, practice quickly tapping jump and immediately dashing to the side, and the room becomes rather easy, although still somewhat nerve-wracking.

>>383257768
different metroidvanias often have unique map implementations, here they just decided for it to be somewhat more tied into the game world than just being an abstract mechanic.
the map guy makes sense because it enforces immediate exploration of any new area you get to, which can make you end up in unexpected places compared to if you just made a dart for it. more importantly, it gives a lore-friendly reason as to why parts of the map are already filled-out when you get it, which allows the devs to show you where you're "supposed" to go without explicitly putting in map markers or giving you written directions,
>>
does anyone find the greenpath looks different now? like instead of daylight it's moonlight?
>>
>>383258165
>Is there any way to save scum this or something?
alas the devs took special care to ensure you can't scum this area, the best you can do is get to a save backup your savegame folder to a different location, and copy it back if you fail, but i would be more annoyed doing that than just retrying.
>>
>>383258165
Yeah I think you can back up your save and turn off Steam Cloud or something.

I mean I feel you, my first playthrough I spent a few hours on it, trying different routes and suffering through the mourner's shrill failure sounds each time, only to discover I'd been trying to get it to the wrong fucking place.

But yeah, jump dash - Crash Bandicoot style, no pause between them while pressing left. That first jump is the bullshit one.

This charm is easily the best one to use always, along with the one that lets you Focus faster so you can actually heal at bosses.
Lets you abuse i-frames and just mash into bosses if they give an opening, or let you get two strikes in instead of one normally if you're quick enough. Trivializes a bunch of bosses, including the final one.

How do I get this grub? I can't get to the other part of this hive down there, just that one yellow chunk.
>>
>people having difficulty with Radiance-chan
What? She took maybe 4 tries for me. It's literally just platforming while attacking, and her circular spear moves leave a good space for attacking.
Climbing up is also super easy since the pillars are kinda random. Then on the new platform area just dodge until she stops in a space where she's hittable rather than flailing through the air like a dipshit.
Astoundingly good atmosphere but I'm still a little muddled on the lore. How the fuck did she make the infection using light powers?

>>

It's not necessarily difficult, just different from the other bosses that give you plenty of opportunities to heal, get in hits and run away, predict movement etc... You kind of get used to the game being very forgiving with most bosses but you can't fuck up too much with her. Given, it also depends on your upgrades (I had seven masks and two vessels, so I had to compensate with Joni's Blessing). I can see how you'd complete it quickly though by just taking it easy instead of jumping around like a madman like it is my habit to do.

Am I just at "that part?"
>>
>>383261323
Not a lot of stuff you can do, because this is a 2D platformer, so most of the rendering difficulties are concerned with CPU clock speed, video memory and shader support.
There are some tips you can follow on the steam community page for HK, like forcing it into DX9 mode, but these are really more trouble-shoot kinda things than panaceas.
If your toaster can't run this game, then there's just not a lot you'll be able to improve that, and same goes for any game based on a similar pseudo-2D rendering framework, like Ori and the Blind Forest and Transistor.

>>383261879
It's not especially hard, and it's definitely no meatboy, but that depends on just how far you intend to delve into this game. the core adventure is fairly straightforward, but getting 100% does require one to be quite adapt at this game. On the bright side, you'll probably spend 24 hours just beating the game normally, so by the time you do actually get to the controller-snappingly hard parts of the game, you'll already be quite good at it in general.
>>
>>383262245
You just suck
>>
>>383261183
It's not clear whether or not she had a physical form in the first place. What is though is that she's the one who gave the bugs their base instinct and the king the one who freed them from being semi-mindless followers. So the Radiance punished them by infecting their mind, the HK was created to contain the infection but it started leaking again and instead of containing the infection once more, you end up mixing the void and the strong souls of the king and the queen to stop the Radiance where it still lives. I assume that since a little part of the king's power and the void is already enough to create Hollow Knights, getting the Void Heart (kingsoul + void) makes you fucking strong, a one man void army following the king's wish of stopping the infection. It's also pretty cool that the previous Hollow Knight comes to help finish off the Radiance, shows how he's not 100%
infected yet, which is made kinda obvious during his fight, that's how fucking strong the king's creations are.

You are at 'the part' where pretty soon a recurring NPC will pop out and tell you it's probably a good idea to go to the city and upgrade your stuff. basically once you get the next movement ability soon-ish, you want to head to the right side of the map to where the bridge is and continue there.

You know, I had the same reaction when I first saw it but realized extra mobility isn't really needed. I don't think there's a single thing you can't dash out of normally and it doesn't have synergy with the upgraded shadow cloak which makes it even weaker.
>>
>>383262867
once you get the next ability the game will really blow open in where you can go, don't worry about it, this is where it stops being "boring" as some people like to call it.

>>383262615
First of all it's made on Unity, so it's a dice roll as to how optimized the devs chose to make it, and second of all, 2D games stress graphics processors in a different way than 3D graphics, especially when you have multi-layered backgrounds with a lot of shader effects like HK has. The unfortunate fact is that big detailed sprites eat up a lot of video memory and have to be carefully managed to avoid a million draw calls from the CPU.

There's something I don't really understand regarding the lore.

The Pale King is supposed to have granted bugs sentience and freed them from Radiance, but not only do you run across two cultures who weren't subject to him (deepnest and mantis village), but some of the characters like Corny and his wife come from abroad, which implies bug civilizations elsewhere.

Also there's a notation or something in mantis village which mentions something like 'the treaty holds, the beasts are kept at bay', obviously referring to the deepnest and implying they had some sort of agreement with hallownest to hold off the hordes.

But... wasn't Herah an ally of the Pale King against the radiance? She may not have been a subject but she worked with him? How does this freaking work?
>>

Just beat the game. What the fuck was going on in the story?
>>
>>383263356
Chances are the Mantids were always free from the control of Radiance, it were only the traitors that willingly gave in to attain higher power.
Herrah and Deep nest was always something of a wild-card, and they didn't obey the king, which is why there's a failed tramway there. Even with the threat of Radiance, she was quite reluctant to help and it took a bunch of deals on his part for her to finally accept the terms.
>>
>>383263398
Lots of games do this, I recommended always using an fps counter to notice it. Also note that if you enabled vsync it has some bug with eating inputs on some configurations.

deepest lore.
also, did you 'just' beat the game, or get the true ending? it probably won't make a hell of a lot more sense, but for it to do otherwise, you really have to grind into this game and all the flavor text.
>>
>>383260350
This was the only scene in the game to make me a bit spooked because normally, that's got to be fucking horrifying being swallowed by the darkness like that, poor Radiance.
>>
>>383263740

>>
>>383263356
You could easily surmise that most, if not all bugs, came from the Hollownest and were thus born of Radiance/Wyrm/King line of rule. Many left, abandoning it, since it's likely easier to get infected, but some came back to try and save it or were called like Quirrel.
Mantises didn't obey the king, but iirc it said they sway the infection by being that dedicated and mindful. The traitors gave into it completely, and still retained some sanity, but were disbarred completely. They also guard the entrance to the deepnest, so maybe the treaty was an agreement for them to do whatever, but they have to be wary of that cesspool of evil having things that wonder up (which maybe only The Collector does).
Herrah seemed to have control of a group of bugs who were protected by her and lived in the deepnest, but got fucked by spiders who betrayed them. But she did mention how she made a completely fair deal to give everything up for a child, so maybe she let them all die.

Ruler goes in a cycle of reincarnation/brightest, as far as we know a Moth starts the line. Bugs come from and follow this.
Then a Wyrm comes, people move on from the moth. Then the Wyrm turns into a king. Moth is long gone, but buttmad, and haunts dreams. She reminds bugs of the primal light, and they go mad and die from a disease of the mind, which manifests physically.
King gets tasked to stop it. He makes a fuckload of mindless, voiceless, soulless shadow knights to fight the light. With the aid of 3 of the strongest bugs, they pick one knight to act as a core/seal for the Moth.
You come in, realize the seal system will never get rid of the problem, and eventually go into the Seal's dreams, and beat the fuck out of the Moth's will directly. With your job done,
you and your kin finally rest.

With a lot of worldbuilding in between. And a cute hornet!

In the trap room all the bugs said they were betrayed. Herrah wouldn't just let her people die unless she was already gone, but she would know the risk that would be taken if she went sleepytime.
You're right though, Hornet's probably her awarded child. Just thought she used a regular thread + needle from the world.

24 hours in, started using a guidemap to work on 100%ing the game now. I didn't keep track of which mask pieces I did and didn't get so that's going to be fun.

Beat Trial of Fools in two tries, at level 3 nail. I don't see the hype - just mash to full soul from the easy spitter boss, then spam Shriek during the no-floor part and that's the hard part over.

I dont get the hype for Hornet, she's too dour and uptight.

The old light was what captivated bug kind beforehand, keeping them primitive and in its thrall. When Wyrm reincarnated as the King he used his power to give bugs true sapience instead and create a new civilization in the form of hallownest.

The Radiance, now forgotten, created the mind plague, so the King made the hollow knights to try and seal it.

there are a few pixels between each saw where you can stand and just inch yourself forward. By the time you get to the middle section you'll have a good feeling for where the safe spots are and you can pogo on the big saw until you get the change.

I suspect you can crystal heart dash through if you time it perfectly, but I never got it right so maybe that's not right.

You can skip 100% of this level with secret paths.

Hornet tells you to find her in a field of ash, there are two ways to get there. After that you get a brand, there is only one door in the game with that brand. After visiting that area you can cross black barriers, crossing one gets you to white lady who gives you half a charm and gives a hint to the other half. You realize you need a stronger dream nail for this, but by this point you were probably buffing it anyway. White palace, get other half, tells you of a birthplace. You remember that Hornet told you the abyss is your birthplace, go down, new door opens. Since you're in the habit of dream nailing everything, you nail your own reflection. Go to end area and see somethings different. Final fight also goes differently -> dream nail the hollow knight since it's a thing now. And there you go, you don't have to be fucking Sherlock to figure it out.

This. He's really the shittest fight in the game. I especially hate how sometimes you move close because his jump usually goes directly at you from far away but then he just decides to jump short right on top of you. Fucking bullshit.

Every other fight is bretty gud. Even the hated False Knight second battle at least has decent tells after you fight him a few times. I figure I should go get more pale ore. But that will likely ruin my run. But then again, I probably won't beat them without a stronger nail.

i'm enjoying it, but i get lost quite a bit and spend a lot of time finding out where to go
game really opened up with wall jump however
>>
Is the DLC out? I wanna play it again, maybe get the true ending this time around.

Is she really a mosquito? hard to tell for me

Nah, later this month. It's probably worth waiting until all three content packs are released to come back and experience it all. I'm waiting until playable Hornet to come back, that way there will be tons of new content and it won't be as fresh in my mind.
>>
>>383285098
Yeah I'll wait on it, I just finished it two weeks ago anyhow.
>>
>>383285098
what will the dlc be about, are they free?

Three free content packs and then a paid DLC with a playable Hornet. The first pack is just going to be two new bosses (looks like Zote and a dream version of Dung Defender), a new form of fast travel, and a new stag station. Here's what we know about the rest from a Kickstarter update:

>“Free content pack 02” is being prepped to follow a few months after the first. This one’s a bit different from pack 01, though equally exciting! More to reveal as we get close.

>“Free content pack 03” is landing later in the year. 03 is a really big one! And no, it’s not playable Hornet, but holy hoy are we excited for it!

>Playable Hornet is happening! And wow is she cool. We’re so excited for this, and for the very special form it’s taking. Ari’s just finished up on Hornet’s additional animations, but there are still many things left before she’s ready for her big reveal. Hornet’s the biggest update we have planned for Hollow Knight’s future, and you’ll be hearing lots more about it as we go. For now, here’s a tiny tease.

>Finally beat Hollow Knight
>Get the "real ending"
>10 second cutscene
>Have no idea what it means
>Realize I just spent 20+ hours on a game without knowing what it's actually about or what my goal was

So uh, what exactly is this game about anyway and what did that ending mean?
>>
>>383285961
In the normal ending you sacrifice yourself to contain some madness that makes all of the bugs go loco, and it repeats in cycles. In the best ending you finally find a way to kill the source of this infection and break the cycle. Something like that.

2 things:

Just found both pieces of the Kingsoul charm. Says "Opens the way to a birthplace.", is it going to be obvious when I'll need it?
I'm missing one charm, the one that goes between Sharp Shadow and Nailmaster's Glory. Any vague hints to where to find that one would be appreciated.

I bought the game on sale but haven't started it yet. Should I do it now or wait for the free content patch that's supposedly coming out this month?
>>
>>383288016
The patch is probably post/end-game content so you might do well to start now.
>>
>>383288297
Alright, I'll give it a go. Thanks!

Where is the acid immunity? I've been wondering this garden level for about 2 hours with nothing but dead acid ends
>>
>>383288754
Royal waterways in the east side.
>>
>>383288754
It's not in the gardens. You need to progress to another area.
>>
>>383288754
Hint: You're not supposed to get one if you are at the part I think you are at.
>>
>>383287854
The first one you need to actively find.
Think about what your character is and where you've seen things similar to you.
For the second on the name of the charm is Shape of Unn

>>383288297
No. The content in the patch is available throughout the game it says.
