You can basically be assured that Mario will work to get as much of those as he can, it's a dick move but when you have something of value whether you obtained that legally or not you may as well get something out of it. It's justifiable within the universe I guess, and considering that Mario has already started collecting those without the one that you dickishly hoarded it's sort of safe to assume that it's really not an issue in the long run, except that store making him pay blue coins, now that's unreasonable.

To be fair there was never any passion put into the New Super Mario games, they never got a fair shake. If Nintendo put as much passion into a 2D Super Mario game as they did, say, Galaxy, the result would be incredible. But we'll never know, because Nintendo keeps doing weird shit like this. No one ever asked for Super Mario to be rebranded or redefined, but Nintendo just does it anyway.
