People got excited for it because MS showed a scripted story trailer for it at E3 which was completely non-indicative of the gameplay. It made people think it was a bioshock type affiar. The devs made it clear on the kickstarter it was a procedural survival type thing but the E3 trailer got a lot more coverage than the kickstarter so a lot of people felt misled.

Same here, I think Starbound was a good game for me to buy simply because it was a learning experience. I've learned to be patient, because being burned sucks.

The only Early Access game I've bought since Starbound has been The Long Dark, and it's because I think it's actually a decent enough game, and the devs seem to update regularly enough. If anything, it's a very atmospheric, sort of spooky game that focuses on fairly realistic survival. It's definitely not for everyone, but I got enjoyment out of it.

When the first teaser was released, I was all "hey, this looks promising".
Every single trailer and piece of gameplay footage released after that left me skeptical. I kept asking myself what you were actually supposed to do in the game besides walk and fly around - nothing, as it turned out. I admit I didn't play it, but I don't think anyone is going to fault me for that at this point.
To me it was clear as day the game wasn't going to deliver. It's sad that not even the stuff they scrapped from the final game, or merely alluded to during the commentary, managed to impress me.
